The Thursday before Memorial Day Weekend the 3rd U.S. Infantry Regiment (the "Old Guard") honors America's fallen heroes by placing American flags at gravesites for service members buried at Arlington National Cemetery. This tradition, known as "Flags In," has taken place annually since the Old Guard was designated as the Army's official ceremonial unit in 1948. Over 1,000 service members placed more than 260,000 flags yesterday. When I arrived at 9 am I thought I had missed them placing the flags because as you entered the cemetery, there were flags as far as your eye could see. I walked to Bobs dads grave site at the bottom of the Tomb Of The Unknown Soldier to place some flowers I brought, walked up the hill to watch the changing of the guard and then headed to the back of the cemetery where I found a very large group of soldiers placing flags.
seeing this, i almost choked. i have a lot of respect for our soldiers, but here in canada we don't seem to do much for our vets and the dead ones are certainly not as celebrated. very nice shot, les. aces!
