This is a full view of the building that features in the shot in my main album. https://365project.org/ljmanning/365/2021-12-04 The old Galt post office was completed in 1887. The two-and-a-half storey stone building is finished in Guelph limestone and features symmetrical twin façades, with elements of Romanesque, Gothic and Second Empire styles. Over the years, it has served as a post office, customs house, municipal office, restaurant, and night club (ah, memories). It is also rumoured to be haunted.
After sitting empty for many years, it was purchased by the city and $13 million renovation, including a cantilevered glass extension, was undertaken. The building was reborn as a digital library, with 3D printers, engineering and arts activities, a recording studio, and a virtual reality suite. The design is not to everyone’s taste, but I love the contrast of traditional and modern and the way it is perched over the river like some giant looming bird.
Very interesting narrative. But about the photo: i was so absorbed by the old building, even zoomed in to habe a better look, that i didn't even notice the glass cube. I went back to check it after reading the narrative. And i have just seen the other photo featuring just the glass cube. It is amazing how the mind works.
It is a great shot!
An interesting location with very mixed style buildings. I am conservative and prefer buildings with a uniform architectural style, but I try to make friends with them because more and more places are showing up with such solutions.
