Loons are incredibly graceful in and on the water. When attempting to take off however… Unlike most birds, loons have solid bones. This helps them dive deep under water, but makes it hard to get airborne. A loon taking off needs a LOT of runway, and creates a great deal of fuss and bother in the process. See exhibit A, above.
