I'm away! by maggiemae

I'm away!

The rhodo featured in yesterdays bud has decided she has reached the point of no return! I took this photo and looked at it closely then had to go out and look at the flower again to see what I had missed. That lime green proddy thing - what is it?
Deb
I think that is called the Stigma. Beautiful flower!

@deburahiru Thank you Deb - googling on......"Stigmas have a sticky top that allows the pollen to stick and pollinate the plant. Without pollination, there would be no seeds. It has a gelatinous and sticky top"

Beautiful shot and very interesting details! I think that's the pistol. Not too sure this late at night. LOL!

@marlboromaam I'm still learning - the stigma is the knob on the top of the pistil!

Yes ... the "pistil" is the name for the entire three part reproductive section with "stigma" being the name for the top part. Great picture.

Well thank you for the biology lesson , we learn all the time here !!! Such an impressive flower, will there be any bees about to land on the'' proddy thing ''?
May 17th, 2012
Pistil, stigma I never expected to learn so much non photographic stuff here but thanks Maggie for the lesson. I still love the soft colors and those blossoms look like delicate tissue paper.

Very nice! I love its stamen too!!!

@happypat Apparently @happypat , the stigma is the self pollinator- doesn't need the bees!
