Another scene in the wilds of West Texas. As I previously described, Fort Davis held an important position in this valley in the 1800's!
The history seems to say that the platoon here were responsible for handling Indian attacks around various camps. There was a book there in the museum about a time in 1877 when a scouting group plus a group of soldiers went out to handle a situation and there was absolutely no water! The result was that only one or two arrived back in destitute condition having got the only water from drinking their own waste and their horses blood! Ugh!
There's no shortage of incredible tales of survival in that region. I love your photo - the sepia lends so much drama to this. I'm glad you at least got to visit some of that rugged, but beautiful, land!
@grammyn Yes, in America, Katy but not in NZ really. We didn't have wild Indians marauding about, just Maoris who just really wanted an excuse to do a haha!
Reminds me of the old cowboy & Indian films, how we used to love them! Lone Ranger & Tonto etc! I can just see the Indians hiding behind those rocks or smoke signals coming over the top!
