The Old and New

When we moved to this area 17 years ago from Melbourne, the majority of the houses along the waterfront were either two storey or single storey weatherboard houses or corrugated shacks like the property on the left. The area became more popular as a tourist destination people bought up the land, demolished the existing shack and built bigger and better houses. These two houses on the waterfront are an example of how times have changed. Many of the houses are still used as holiday homes.

The ramp which you can see in front of the house on the right goes down to the water so that the owner can pull up his boat right up to the property.

Can't help thinking though that some of the character of the area has gone now.
I don’t mind new buildings, but I do hope that the architects are more sympathetic to the environment in their designs.

That really is a contrast. I prefer the left house!!! I dont think those new ones look like houses. They look like office blocks

I thought they were office's also

The new house does have a bit of an office look to it although I bet the view out from the inside is wonderful.

Have to agree with you, Babs! I love the old better than the new.

I know what you mean about places losing their character.

I've never seen a place where you could pull the boat right out of the house and down the slope to the water!

Great shot...I kind of prefer a weathered older beach house....but the new one is beautiful and quite expensive I am sure!!

More money than taste! Lovely capture Babs. Thank you for sharing

WOW! Sad transition, cool capture! I prefer the old charm any day!

@yaorenliu Every house here is different and some are sympathetic and some are not.

@gypsy6 They do a bit sometimes. I think it is because they are built as holiday homes and are more houses rather than homes.

@lafish Know what you mean Laurie. I never thought of that until you and Deb mentioned it.

@paulaw The view is fantastic, which is probably why it is in the million dollars and upwards bracket!!!

@joeyc Thanks Joey. The one on the left has more character and if it were painted it would look brilliant. Much more like a home than the one on the right.

@humphreyhippo Thanks. I feel the one on the left has character but just needs a bit of a facelift and it would look brilliant.

@sbolden A lot of the houses on the waterfront have that.

@eyesmile I agree. The one on the left has character and the one on the right is just a holiday home, looks beautiful also, but not lived in very much. A very expensive way to spend a few weeks a year.

@derekvickers You could be right there Derek. Looks nice, but a bit flash.

@sunraye Thanks Raye. Some of the new houses on the waterfront look really good, but although this is beautiful I don't think it is a home.

I've been coming up here for holidays to our old family 'shack' since the late 50's, a few years ago my brother demolished the 'shack' and built a 'more money than taste' monster, much to my disgust. Love the old shacks.

@winnedreamer Hope you have got a photo of the old shack Nic. Some of the new houses look okay, but some really drown out the old ones which have character.
