We went for a walk along the Tomaree Headland and saw this galleon at Shoal Bay. Apparently it is a replica of a Spanish galleon and the chap who owns it built it himself.
It reminded Anita of the poem Cargoes by John Masefield and she tried to remember the lines from it. Luckily I had my phone with me and we Googled the poem as we walked along the waterfront. One of the lines in it is - Stately Spanish galleon coming from the Isthmus,
Dipping through the Tropics by the palm-green shores.
PS Since posting this photo I have discovered that this ship is a replica 15th century caravel named Notorious and built in a Warrnambool backyard by Graeme Wylie.
Graeme and Felicity have a few modern conveniences including a diesel engine tucked away but they are enjoying living the pirate life. If anyone is interested here is a link about the ship. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Notorious_(ship)
What amazing capture of this Galleon! Fabulous background! I'd like to see this in person also! And wouldn't it be fun to chat with the guy who build this... work of art, architecture, ship, galleon?
Fabulous picture of this galleon and what a clever chap for building it himself. I love that John Masefield poem and it's the last verse that I like for the meter.
Dirty British coaster with a salt-caked smoke stack,
Butting through the Channel in the mad March days,
With a cargo of Tyne coal,
Road-rails, pig-lead,
Firewood, iron-ware, and cheap tin trays.
@gamelee@streats@mabuss@eyesmile@sunraye It really is beautiful. I know this isn't the best picture of it in the world, but the light was wrong and this was the best I could get. We went through Shoal Bay tonight on our way to meet friends for dinner and it has gone now. He only stayed here two days and is off on his travels again.
@gypsy6 That little boat you took a picture of was brilliant.
@steampowered Thanks Paul. Cargoes by John Masefield is one of Anita's favourite poems. I think Mum used to read it to her when she was small. She had never read Box of Delights though by John Masefield and I have the book and also the BBC DVD of it and we have watched it while she has been here. One of my favourite children's books along with The Midnight Folk also by John Masefield.
@yaorenliu It does look like a pirate ship. That's what I thought when I first saw it.
