As my last few photos have all been taken at Stockton, I thought I would post this mural illustrating some of the history of Stockton.
Stockton was settled almost as soon as the foundation of Newcastle in 1797. It was originally called "Pirates Point" as the result of escaped convicts being shipwrecked on the peninsula in 1800. The southern tip of the peninsula, near the northern breakwater is still known as "Pirate Point". For much of the 19th century it served as an industrial and mining base.
Great mural, and my goodness, Stockton must have some interesting, even exciting, stories to tell. An inspiring place for an historian or a writer as well as photographers and artists.
@chrysanthemum Thanks Christina, it does have a lot of history. I love visiting all of the Newcastle suburbs, they all have a story to tell and a great place for photography too.
@gilbertwood I agree Denise. Lots of history in the murals. Have you ever been to Kurri Kurri, they have about 50 murals around the town and all tell a story.
what a great mural. I have strong connections with Newcastle as my father worked there with shipping companies and my husband and I worked for a big steel company in Sydney who had their steel mills in Newcastle. And I have some family who live up that way.
@pamdavis2015@golftragic Thanks to you both. I try to get some of the history on photos if I can because when I look at other people's shots I find it much more interesting if there is a story behind the photo.
Good to see you back Marnie. Hope all is well.
With this type of shot I always try to put the story behind the photo and glad you enjoyed it.
Good to see you back Marnie. Hope all is well.
