Home With a View

This sculpture hangs outside the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra and as you can see a starling has made a nest in it.

Apparently Mr and Mrs Starling have been coming back to the same nest for a couple of years now.

Quite a desirable residence with an excellent view of Canberra.
Obviously birds that have an appreciation for modern art. Neat shot!

Great shot. Jane Martin has told me, you did not receive my reply, regarding posting seven days a week. This is a shortened version. The reason she is not posting every day is because, girls talk more than boys.

Very well spotted Babs.

Amazing sculpture and more amazing that Mr and Mrs Starling have also found it an ideal place to nest

Great focus and lots of detail stands out well against the sky Babs, I don't know how long its been up there over the road but I've a photograph of it minus the nest taken a few years ago when I went into the Sculpture Park and also the Chinese garden some where around there with my sister:)

Cool looking!

The bird has great taste! What a lovely piece of real estate for her to have chosen.
February 4th, 2017
👍👍👍
February 4th, 2017
I wonder if the sculptor ever imagined his piece as a bird house? Good catch!
February 4th, 2017
Great capture!

Great shot eagle-eye. Trust a darned starling to do something like that, 'orrible birds that they are. But I do like the shot very much. Do you reckon the starlings are trying to one-up Mr Harbourside-Mansion??

At least the starlings won't have problems with predators. The only problem is, in Canberra in summer the temperature is cool at night going down to about 15 degrees C and then can rise to 35-40 degrees during the day. On this day it was 35 degrees c, so I hope the babies didn't overheat.

@pcoulson I don't know how long it has been there either Peter, but quite a long time I think. It has always been there since we first visited Canberra many years ago. I must try and find who the sculptor is and what it is called.
February 4th, 2017
@ethelperry They seem to survive. I agree though, they must get pretty warm. The day we were there it was 35 degrees c.
February 4th, 2017
@olivetreeann Ha ha, I don't think he had that in mind when he made the sculpture.
February 4th, 2017
@golftragic Thanks Marnie. I am not a fan of starlings either. We don't get them where I live. They tend to be city birds. I don't think it was the brightest idea to make a nest in here though. It must get bloody hot during the day. The day we were there it was 35 degrees C.

This is the second 'ball' that has hung outside the gallery. The first one they had was much nice but it was hit by lightening many years ago now and replaced with this one.
February 4th, 2017
This looks amazing, hanging there against the blue sky. Silly bird though - hasn't exactly blended in with it's surroundings!
February 4th, 2017
Thats an interesting sculpture
February 5th, 2017
that's amazing. guess its pretty safe in there
February 5th, 2017
Lol, what a strange place to have a nest! I guess they are reasonable safe up there and the gaps would make it air conditioned too. It's quite an interesting looking sculpture, all the different shapes making up a sphere.
