Central Hall by onewing

Central Hall

Following on from yesterday's Newcastle Cathedral 'seeing-to' photo, I thought I would give the same treatment to another of Newcastle's buildings.

The Central Hall was opened in 1903 and from around 1905 it was used to screen films from travelling picture shows. Apparently, it never had a permanent projection box. Seating was provided in stalls and a horse-shoe shaped circle.

Film use ceased in the late-1920’s and the building was then used for live performances. It became the Mission Theatre from 31st July 1992 and this lasted several years.

By March 2010, it was in use as Bacchus Restaurant. The doors of the Bacchus Restaurant closed in 2013.

In 2014 the restaurant was bought by Irish restaurateur Hugh Halpin and renamed Central. It is now a successful 120 seat restaurant and bar.

Thanks so much for your lovely comments and favs on yesterdays photo. sorry I am a bit absent at the moment.

Excellent processing again. Interesting piece of history too 😊

Great photo and editing. It takes it back the types of b&w films it would of showed when it opened, which gives it added story.

It has quite a history, good that it's still in use though - what sort of food does it serve Babs? Irish? Australian?
