Loading the Coal

This is the last collage of our tour of Port Waratah Coal Services in Newcastle.

Here you can see the coal being loaded onto the bulk carrier ships for its journey mainly to China and Japan.
I’ve enjoyed seeing these.

Another cool collage Babs 👍☺

I still find it strange to think of us moving our heavy natural resources so far around the world. We are all so dependent on each other .... I wish some people would realise that.

Stunning shots in this lovely collage.

Really great collage. It shows the importance of coal to your country, this is huge business!

Intrigues me how we have run from fossil fuels, of which we still have plenty, and are struggling to find sufficient other resources that people find acceptable, yet the pollution levels in many of our cities are way above what is considered healthy. Methinks coal gets a bad press unnecessarily sometimes. Love these shots. Docks and warehouses are fascinating places and trade is good for both buyer and seller.

Looks like you had an interesting visit Babs, it's been an eye opener to see all this activity going on through your images.

Really like this collage

Coal is used lots in those counties I believe, not so much here these days, it seems to be more wood over here. Used to love a good coal fire but it causes smog so they say & its frowned upon in these health conscious fussy days. Interesting collage.

Love the series. Great shot of a nearly historical industrial process.
In our country the use of coal is very debatable and not wanted anymore.

Considering it's coal everything looks tidy and clean.

@helenhall Indeed.

@casablanca I think coal gets a bad press too. In New South Wales we have 5 coal power stations, 8 solar, 5 gas turbine, 15 gas reciprocating engines, 24 hydro-electric and 31 windfarms.

@happypat Coal isn't used in houses these days in Australia but we still have 21 coal power stations in the whole of Australia. If you read above the list of power stations in New South Wales includes 5 coal power stations.
I believe there are 8 coal power stations in the UK. The UK would fit into NSW about 3 times though. We have a wood burner fire here and in the UK we used to have either gas heating, electricity heating or oil in our various houses. Of course the electricity was powered by coal though. We do still need coal though until a reasonably priced alternative is available.

@pyrrhula Coal is indeed debatable, but we have to be able to produce alternatives cheaply.

I'm always fascinated with the mammoth size of dock machinery and shipping boats. Good collage!

I've enjoyed your journey through the coal terminal Babs. Can't say I'm a fan of coal, particularly brown coal, but you're right, we need viable alternatives - urgently.

Fascinating to see it all working.

@kathiecb I was amazed how clean it is too. They go to a lot of effort to stop coal dust etc being blown into the atmosphere.

@golftragic I discovered at PWCS that 75% of the coal mined in Australia is exported. Know what you mean about brown coal (lignite). I think Victoria is the only state where brown coal is mined.
May 11th, 2018
@onewing The export rate doesn't surprise me, but I don't really approve of exporting the stuff to someone else's country either. I know there are pros and cons, but it all makes me very uncomfortable. You're quite right re lignite, very dirty stuff and only used in Victoria.
