We have been out with the walking group today. Drove to Stockton, took the ferry across to Newcastle and walked around to some of the sights in town, Nobby's lighthouse, the Custom House, Fort Scratchley and other interesting places.
This photo is of Queen's Wharf taken from the ferry.
@annied@kjarn You will both have to come up from Sydney and check out Newcastle some time, lots of photo opportunities.
If you want to see the tower though Kathy you will have to be quick as it is due to be demolished in a couple of months as part of the 'improvements' in Newcastle.
@louannwarren In 1988 on Australia's bicentenary the Queen stepped off the royal yacht at Newcastle harbour and officially opened the new waterside precinct and tower named Queen's Wharf and Queen's Wharf Tower. The tower is an observation tower with fabulous views across Newcastle. It has attracted many quizzical looks and awkward questions over the years from visitors and residents alike, mainly because of its unmistakable phallic shape.
The architect who designed the tower thought it would be there for maybe 5 years maximum so isn't upset that it is shortly to be demolished.
@helenhall If you check out the previous reply to Lou Ann you will see the significance of the wharf and the tower. The wharf is to remain, but the tower is due to be demolished at the end of this year.
@louannwarren I've taken lots of photos from the tower over the years and quite a few are on 365. The tower was only supposed to be a temporary structure.
It looks a lovely sunny day - the weather has changed in the UK. Feels like we're back to the usual summer. You do some great walks by the sound of it.
@flowerfairyann@angelar Thanks, it was pretty warm for winter. Unfortunately we have only had 5 mm rain since the end of June and there are lots of bushfires burning across New South Wales. I think we are in for a rather bleak summer as far as fires go if it doesn't rain soon.
@golftragic Newcastle is always an interesting place to walk and lots of photo opportunities too. The fires are a worry aren't they especially as it is still winter. We had one at Bobs Farm a couple of days ago about 15 km from us so it could get worse before summer.
@olivetreeann It was a lovely day. An interesting walk, good company and lunch at the wharf too. Doesn't get better than that does it.
@golftragic one is at Medowie ine at Sakt Ash and one at Mallabula. All within a few miles of each other and I bet they were deliberately lit because it is so dry. Dry weather or hot weather alwaya brings out the loonies

Even though it is still winter here in the southern hemisphere the weather was around 19 degrees C. I love visiting Newcastle there are always so many photo opportunities.
