Today begins the start of the demolition of the Queen's Wharf Tower. The 30 year old structure is to be removed as part of the development of the centre of Newcastle. It will be sad to see it go, as from the top you could see fabulous views of Newcastle. I guess this is what we call progress.
I can understand how you feel. So many buildings which we have come to cherish along the years are erased as part of what people call progress and very often replaced by ugly buildings which, again, are called modern.
@sangwann@louannwarren You can see some of the 'tasteful' redevelopment already in this picture, if you can call it that.
The beautiful old buildings are sandwiched between the concrete and glass high rise buildings and it is a shame to see some of the history of Newcastle go.
@hermann It was a bit of an expensive structure to keep going apparently, but still sad to see it go
That's too bad- it looks like one of those iconic structures that is identified with a specific place (like the Empire State Building is for NYC). Sad to see it go but you will always have the picture.
@henrir@ludwigsdiana@mandygravil@mittens@craftymeg@carolmw@kwind@pyrrhula@helenhall@olivetreeann It will be interesting to see what replaces it, but I suspect it will just be another restaurant on the wharf. The walkway from the tower to the other side of Hunter Street was demolished last year and now you have to take your life in your hands trying to cross the road which sometime in the future will include a light rail.
