Its Days Are Numbered

Today begins the start of the demolition of the Queen's Wharf Tower. The 30 year old structure is to be removed as part of the development of the centre of Newcastle. It will be sad to see it go, as from the top you could see fabulous views of Newcastle. I guess this is what we call progress.
How sad to see it go Babs. I don't call that progress at all.

I can understand how you feel. So many buildings which we have come to cherish along the years are erased as part of what people call progress and very often replaced by ugly buildings which, again, are called modern.

I do hope the future development will be tasteful.

What a shame to see it go :)

@golftragic Me neither

@sangwann @louannwarren You can see some of the 'tasteful' redevelopment already in this picture, if you can call it that.
The beautiful old buildings are sandwiched between the concrete and glass high rise buildings and it is a shame to see some of the history of Newcastle go.

@hermann It was a bit of an expensive structure to keep going apparently, but still sad to see it go

So sad to see it torn down. Probably put something more modern there.

Such a pity when the old landmarks disappear.

I don't understand why such iconic buildings are meddled with. You have a good photo to remember it by.

Great shot and that is what seems to happen for progress even thought it is sad.

It’s an interesting shape, I would miss it too.

A shame to lose this landmark
September 17th, 2018
Very interesting looking. Too bad it's coming down!
September 17th, 2018
No sorrows if the new is much better and nicer. Great pic. to remind what has gone.

I wonder what you will get to replace it. I rather like the look of the tower - I am sure that a new development could have been built around it.
September 17th, 2018
That's too bad- it looks like one of those iconic structures that is identified with a specific place (like the Empire State Building is for NYC). Sad to see it go but you will always have the picture.

@henrir @ludwigsdiana @mandygravil @mittens @craftymeg @carolmw @kwind @pyrrhula @helenhall @olivetreeann It will be interesting to see what replaces it, but I suspect it will just be another restaurant on the wharf. The walkway from the tower to the other side of Hunter Street was demolished last year and now you have to take your life in your hands trying to cross the road which sometime in the future will include a light rail.

Reminds me of the tower they use for diving practice at Portsmouth for the Navy.......only more see through! Sad to see landmarks go.
September 18th, 2018
Not progress at all, it's a shame to lose this landmark.
September 18th, 2018
Had to look back to see what was being demolished! I'm surprised they are demolishing it as it's rather smart!
September 18th, 2018
I think this scene will be rather strange without it.

What a sad thing to read -- and only 30 years old. It seems to be such a landmark to view from the sea and piers.

So sad to see an iconic part of Newcastle destroyed
