Another photo of the Queen's Wharf tower. Demolition began yesterday and the top half of the tower has been removed. The centre will be removed today and the final stage tomorrow.
Next time I go to Newcastle I will photograph what the wharf looks like once the tower has gone.
I remember you saying one time the tower was not built to stay? It was built for a celebration? Anyway I’m sure it will be missed, especially by those who liked to go the top for the views it offered.
I like the symmetry and viewpoint here. Good shot! I imagine it will look very different. I still look at the NYC skyline expecting to see the Twin Towers.
@happypat They have big plans for the whole of Newcastle. The railway line has gone and being replaced with a light rail. A lot of the old buildings have disappeared to make room for high rise living and I suspect the only thing that can be placed in this section of the wharf is another restaurant. At least the developers and scrap dealers will have large bank accounts now.
@louannwarren Yes, it was built in 1988 for the Australia Bicentenary and officially opened by the Queen.
