You will probably initially think that this photo is of a glorious sunset but you would be mistaken it is in fact the bushfire that went through our neighbourhood on Monday night.
The fire was deliberately lit on Monday evening around 6.30 pm and this photo was taken from our local shopping centre car park about 9 pm by a friend. The fire came so close to houses and also our community centre and library, but luckily no houses or lives were lost. It did burn through the Mambo wetlands though and lots of koalas were injured and some in fact died in the fire.
It was the third suspicious fire in a week in this area. I do hope they manage to find the culprits. We have had a few fires in and around Port Stephens over the last few months at Salt Ash, Medowie and Mallabula and every one was deliberately lit.
I was quite sick on Monday so didn't know how close the fire was until the next day when my friend showed me this picture. Our cars were covered in ash on Tuesday morning though after the fire was under control.
Of course, we could smell smoke but still didn't realise that the fire was as close as it was to where I live.
I am still not feeling too great but I am trying to catch up with your photos occasionally at the moment in between having lots of sleeps.
Thanks so much for your lovely comments on my filler photos over the last few days, sorry I can't reply individually but I have read all your comments.
It must be scary to see this, probably a good thing that you weren't aware of how close it was. It's hard to imagine what's going on in the heads of the people who started it.
I lose all my sense of civility when I think about people deliberately destroying habitat and property because they want to see something burn. Their homes should be set on fire with them locked in it! (Of course removed before anything serious happens to them but still enough to make them feel what they've done to innocent animals and people). I do hope the criminals can be caught- although how would they ever make good on what they've done? At least they'd be stopped. Dramatic shot!
Wow! Maybe it was a good thing that you didn't realize at first how close it was! Hope you keep improving and that they catch the person/persons who lit this and the other fires soon.
How utterly criminal to start fires deliberately. Thank goodness no lives were lost but I'm guessing properties have been lost or badly affected. Glad you are safe. I do hope you continue to get better. You've hd quite a time of it recently. Thank you for getting enough energy to comment on any of our photos. I'm sure we all just wish you well again.
Oh my goodness, how terrifying.
A very powerful image.
Such a shame that empty brains occupy themselves with wanton destruction and no care for neighbours, nature or wildlife.
I hope you keep improving :)
