Bushfire by onewing

Bushfire

You will probably initially think that this photo is of a glorious sunset but you would be mistaken it is in fact the bushfire that went through our neighbourhood on Monday night.

The fire was deliberately lit on Monday evening around 6.30 pm and this photo was taken from our local shopping centre car park about 9 pm by a friend. The fire came so close to houses and also our community centre and library, but luckily no houses or lives were lost. It did burn through the Mambo wetlands though and lots of koalas were injured and some in fact died in the fire.

It was the third suspicious fire in a week in this area. I do hope they manage to find the culprits. We have had a few fires in and around Port Stephens over the last few months at Salt Ash, Medowie and Mallabula and every one was deliberately lit.

I was quite sick on Monday so didn't know how close the fire was until the next day when my friend showed me this picture. Our cars were covered in ash on Tuesday morning though after the fire was under control.

Of course, we could smell smoke but still didn't realise that the fire was as close as it was to where I live.

I am still not feeling too great but I am trying to catch up with your photos occasionally at the moment in between having lots of sleeps.

Thanks so much for your lovely comments on my filler photos over the last few days, sorry I can't reply individually but I have read all your comments.
Wow that's a bit scary... just as well you didn't know too much about it.. You have to wonder what goes through the heads of these senseless acts..

Totally brainless, aren't they?
December 15th, 2018

December 15th, 2018
What a scary thing to be happening.
December 15th, 2018
Such senseless loss of wildlife, makes me really angry at these fools.
I hope you keep improving :)
December 15th, 2018
An excellent capture and quite scary!!! Feel better soon! Fav.
December 15th, 2018
It must be scary to see this, probably a good thing that you weren't aware of how close it was. It's hard to imagine what's going on in the heads of the people who started it.
December 15th, 2018
Makes for a great photo but such wilful destruction is terrible
December 15th, 2018
no, immediately thought, Bushfire!! How scary. Glad you are OK.
December 15th, 2018
Ooh my ! what a scary sight - glad you were not harmed !
December 15th, 2018
This is so sad, I really feel for the wildlife who are doing it tough at the best of times, glad you are ok though.
December 15th, 2018
How very sad that people deliberately set fires. I hope the culprit is captured before he/she sets any more!
December 15th, 2018
Bushfire was my first thought too. I can't understand why these idiots deliberately light fires. I certainly hope that they're caught.
December 15th, 2018
We unfortunately have plenty of these too Babs. Sad that there are so many nasty people around. Look after yourself and get well soon.
December 15th, 2018
when they are caught, I hope they hang.for a very long time
December 15th, 2018
Arson is a heinous crime. You have captured the scariness of this bushfire.
December 15th, 2018
Oh no this is terrible................hope they find the culprits!
December 15th, 2018
That is tertiblr. I do hope the catch them and put them away firevrr. I'm so glad no one was injuref. I'm so sorry about the koalas.
December 15th, 2018
Fires are so destructive. Sad to read that they are being deliberately set. Hope that the culprits will be found and harshly dealt with.
December 15th, 2018
That is truly evil and so scary for you. Sorry you are still not feeling great, Babs, and hope you are soon better. Take care.
December 15th, 2018
I lose all my sense of civility when I think about people deliberately destroying habitat and property because they want to see something burn. Their homes should be set on fire with them locked in it! (Of course removed before anything serious happens to them but still enough to make them feel what they've done to innocent animals and people). I do hope the criminals can be caught- although how would they ever make good on what they've done? At least they'd be stopped. Dramatic shot!
December 15th, 2018
Why does someone start a fire like this which destroys houses and lives - it's beyond me!
December 15th, 2018
An image and story full of drama Babs you just can't understand how stupid some people can be:)
December 15th, 2018
Wow! Maybe it was a good thing that you didn't realize at first how close it was! Hope you keep improving and that they catch the person/persons who lit this and the other fires soon.
December 15th, 2018
How utterly criminal to start fires deliberately. Thank goodness no lives were lost but I'm guessing properties have been lost or badly affected. Glad you are safe. I do hope you continue to get better. You've hd quite a time of it recently. Thank you for getting enough energy to comment on any of our photos. I'm sure we all just wish you well again.

@olivetreeann exactly what she said!!!!
December 15th, 2018
What scares me most is the helplessness for such actions. These are sick people. And the damage they do is unrecoverable.
December 15th, 2018
How sick some people are, causing death and destruction for their own gratification
December 15th, 2018
Scaring. Great shot never the less. Get well soon.
December 15th, 2018
Heart breaking. Sick. Unsettling. Poor koalas not to mention trees and wetlands. Glad you and your neighbors are ok
December 16th, 2018
Wow, scary.
December 16th, 2018
I hope they catch those stupid, brainless fools. I am saddened at the loss of the koalas and wetlands but relieved that you are okay.
December 16th, 2018
Oh my.
December 16th, 2018
Amazing capture Babs! Hope all is ok now.
December 16th, 2018
Oh my goodness, how terrifying.
A very powerful image.
Such a shame that empty brains occupy themselves with wanton destruction and no care for neighbours, nature or wildlife.
December 16th, 2018
Oh my how absolutely terrifying and totally senseless glad you were safe
December 16th, 2018
Yikes!!!!!!
