This morning started off quite chilly and grey. I really thought we would get some rain as I walked round the headland, but as the day continued the weather improved and we now have glorious sunshine. Pity really because we really need some rain.
When we first moved to New South Wales from Victoria 24 years ago all the houses along this stretch of the waterfront were just fishing shacks like the two blue houses in the bottom left picture, but as time went on the cost of land rose and the old shacks gave way to the gin palaces you see in the bottom right picture.
Although I do like some of the new houses it is sad to see the history of this area disappearing.
The little blue shacks are still standing proud at the moment, but I do wonder how long it will be before someone buys this patch of land and the shacks will disappear.
Oh my, that gin palace is amazing! Here we have areas where people tear down perfectly good homes and build huge mansions on the small lots. They do this because they want to live in certain areas.
"Progress" tends to erase history as easy as the sun erases the darkness. Sadly I think that once one "gin palace" goes up more people of the same mindset move in and then the little shacks become "eyesores" even though they're perfectly fine. A similar thing is happening around here where people are cutting down trees because they want a grass lawn. I always want to say to them, "Why didn't you just stay where every house has a grass lawn instead of coming out to the forest and ruining the environment by cutting down the trees?!" Well, enough of my soap box- good collage!
It’s sad to see these characterful old houses disappear & money takes precedence over charm. You see it when we visit NZ on the coast especially...old beach houses replaced but amazing modern structures....the old ones left look really out of place along side but I love the old corrugated roof places.
Unfortunately it's happening everywhere. I used to be an Real Estate Agent and can tell stories.
With luck the little blue house will stay for a long time.
Wow, what a contrast between the historical and the current. Sad to see the old disappearing and that there isn't a way of incorporating them into the newer structures.
