This section of Foreshore Drive in Salamander Bay is about 2 km long and is completely blocked off as you can see since the road collapsed. during our recent heavy rains.
The road is closed to traffic at either end of this section of road and you have to walk about 1 km to get to the hole in the road whichever side you approach it from.
The top photo is from our closest side of the foreshore and the bottom shot is from the far side of the road.
To get to the far side of Foreshore Drive we have to drive 7 km around Salamander Bay, park the car by the blocked off section of road and then walk 1 km to the hole in the road.
Unfortunately, my favourite tree is on the far side of the collapsed road but it was lovely to see it is still standing when I walked on that side of the beach a few days ago.
I think it will be quite some time before I am able to walk to the tree from our side of Salamander Bay.
It is possible to get there along the beach from our side of the bay but it depends on the tides and also there are the mangrove swamps along that stretch of water too, so it gets a bit soggy along the way. It is easier to get to from the far side of Foreshore Drive but as I said above we have a 7 km drive to get there now.
The bad news is that the road has been washed away and the good news is that my favourite tree is still standing
That's the section of road that was on the BBC news! Fame at last. I hope they can get on and mend it speedily, that's an awfully long meander around for you. Love the triptych
What a story! I'm sure you will find a way to get to your tree. Shame about the road. Some have it while some have not - you are getting all the rain while we have had almost no rain at all this last month.
@casablanca I can't believe that such an insignificant road would make it to the BBC news. There are only about 29 waterfront houses on this 2 km stretch of road and the rest of the road is made up of mangrove wetlands. It was only a matter of time before this section would be washed away as there is a culvert under the road.
Ps: Great shot.
Ian
@ladymagpie I would have pole vaulted over the gap, but I didn't have my pole with me.
@helenhall I think it might have been over 600 mm constant rain over a 7 day period that may have done the damage
