Irony

This isn’t the best picture in the world technically, but it was very difficult to get the right angle of the wind turbine, the coal and coal loader in the one shot. I risked life and limb crossing the road at Kooragang Island to get this photo and also had to climb on a wall by the bridge to get the height right. The things we do for a photo.

This wind turbine was installed in 1997. It was the first commercial wind generation project in Australia to become accredited under the former national GreenPower project.

The turbine generates enough kilowatt hours of renewable energy to power 150 homes for a year.

Unfortunately, its days are numbered since it was revealed two years ago that the turbine’s concrete footings overlapped plans for a future ship turning bay, or swing basin, in the area. There is also talk of building a fourth coal loader on the site.

Today's main album photo

A true 365er risking life and limb to shoot your goal (excuse the pun )

What a shame to hear about the demise of the wind turbine, they and solar energy should be the future. Great capture Babs, well worth the adventure :-)

Well done Babs - glad you came out uninjured! Great shot.

Sam
The things we do for 365! You have done well :)

Argh - they are going the wrong way. More wind turbines, less coal! Great how you got both in the same shot. Amazing what we will do for 365!

That does tell a tale. It seems a bit silly to get rid of it. Maybe they could just move it. Unless it is a politician who made the decision. They seem to favour dollars over our future.

And to think there would be people high in our political parties who would be happy to hear that. :( I hope they are able to recommission it somewhere else. Thanks for risking life and limb for this great photo and information. :)

Great shot, But I have to say I hate wind turbines, so I won't be sorry to see it go!

great effort

I agree with @sioux waste of time I think.....they are never going round! Good for you Babs above the call of duty! Interesting to see what goes on in other countries!

Ok Don Quixote, but be careful!

Now, that's what I call dedication to one's photography. But the shot was well worth the effort Babs.

Great shot, and I'm glad you didn't suffer any injuries! :-)

@beryl Thanks Beryl. David is used to me doing odd things for a photo. although when I climbed on the wall I must admit he said "What are you doing now".

@hermann There are other wind turbines in the area and apparently they tried to sell this one, but no takers so I guess it will be scrapped. There are more efficient ones now though and this was the first.

@net @gigiflower Thanks. @bristol_colin @lpot1985 @happypat @chimfa @golftragic @tabarlett Thanks so much. The things we do for a photo. David is used to me getting myself into odd positions to get a photo and usually he records the event by taking a photo of me taking a photo. ha ha.

@888rachel @karlow75 @darthkitty @sioux Thanks, I think this wind turbine is past its use by date though as it was one of the first here and there are much more powerful ones now I believe. They did try to sell this one, but wasn't worth what they were asking. there are other turbines within view of this one.

@kathiecb Coal and wind, that's the irony. ha ha.
August 8th, 2014
@eyesmile Thanks Gena. Thought I'd better get this shot before the turbine went.
