100 Strangers : No. 11 : Vicky by phil_howcroft

100 Strangers : No. 11 : Vicky

We went to Nottingham today to ride along the two recently opened tram lines. Nottingham to Toton and back followed by lunch in Nottingham, Nottingham to Clifton and back and then while Jane went to do some shopping, I had a little wander around Nottingham to find a stranger.

The Brian Clough statue is the 'speakers corner' in the city. There was a protest / demo going ahead to 'save our National Health Service', so I thought it might be a good opportunity to find a stranger.

I noticed Vicky selling copies of "Solidarity" and approached her for a photo.

Vicky was worried I was from an extreme right wing organisation that 'outs' people with left of centre views. I said I was an amateur photographer and had never heard of the said organisation. I explained I was doing a strangers project and would like to take her picture.

She said it was OK to take a picture and gave me a nice smile. I showed her the picture, shook her hand and went off to catch the bus home :)

Thanks for the picture Vicky and I wish you well with your protests and sales of your paper.

Edited in Rawtherapee, with natural skin tone adjustments and a little contrast adjustment.

The background was difficult as there were lots of people milling around, but I managed to just about avoid distracting element and the bright colours of the shop windows seem to work OK.

This picture is number 11 in my 100 strangers project. Find out more about the project and see pictures taken by other photographers at the 100 Strangers Flickr Group page

Fav for the great portrait capture and for your courage to ask strangers to pose for you. I suppose your lovely smile melts them down to accept. I love her pretty face and that tender smile.

Well done. Just don't know how you get the pictures taken. Very brave!!!!

Vicky looks an excellent subject Phil, I expect she was pleased with it. A sorry world when people think you have ulterior motives!

@ivan thank you very much ivan, glad you like this shot

@happypat thanks Pat, I hope Vicky sees this shot as it is a nice shot of her. As for ulterior motives, I think it was / is more a case of vicky being nervous of the extreme far right than nervous of me :)

@sdutoit thank you sylvia, I am wary of who to approach and I try to do it with respect :)

@quietpurplehaze thanks Haze, I edited my narrative earlier today to remove the name of the far right organisation as I did not want to give them a 'name check'. Glad you like the shot. It is a good one I think :)

@sangwann I think you are right dione, my smile might work sometimes:)

@nickspicsnz cheers nick :)

@annied eyes can be hard to get right behind glasses, bit my camera seems to have done a decent job here annie :)

@eyesmile thanks gena, i am pleased you approve of the shot :)

@photographycrazy cheers Bill

I like how you've included her organisation's publication to tell us a little bit about her. Great portrait, she looks like a lovely lady but I think she could be rather formidable too if need be.
And I am desperately envious of her beautiful, white hair.

@dulciknit thanks alison, i think the inclusion of the paper does indeed help tell the story. As for the white hair, well I cannot possibly comment on a ladies hair on a public forum :) :)

You did a great job with the background, Phil. Adds a punch of color without being distracting.

She looks v comfortable in her face (if you know what I mean) Nice.

I like how the colors of her outfit go along with the colors in the flyers she is holding.
