In addition to fresh green leaves, our alder tree has skeletal brown ones. And then I noticed small black caterpillar-like forms.

A quick Google revealed them to be the larvae of the alder leaf beetle and the optimum season May to July.

Shame I missed the beetles which appear to have an iridescent blue carapace.

We shall not 'treat' them as they do not kill the tree and may even disappear by next year. Alder leaf beetle was thought to be extinct in the UK but re-appeared in 2014 as close to us as Southampton - approx 7 miles away.

Google knows, and tells, all!
Interesting image in monochrome tones, with lovely focus and patterns Hazel, thank you for the additional information:)

Super shot for the challenge - you always think that you have to have the same pattern but here I see that you captured a unique pattern, way to see the challenge outside the box.
