“Frangipani” by rhoing

“Frangipani”

Probably better known as “Plumeria,” this is Plumeria rubra (of the family Apocynaceae). I spotted these pinwheel-shaped blooms high off the floor in the greenhouse, but — voila! — there was a short ladder nearby. Note the tightly-twisted buds that haven’t opened yet. I hope to post a shot of new leaves from this tree; their coloring, texture and vein-pattern are very cool! Or see two full sized images at PhytoImages now:

The family Apocynaceae also includes the Common wax plant (Hoya carnosa),

and the Rose periwinkle (Catharanthus roseus), http://365project.org/rhoing/365/2013-03-13

The “genus name honors 17th century French botanist Charles Plumier. Common name of frangipani is from the name of a 16th century Italian nobleman [Muzio Frangipane] who created a perfume with a similar scent. Plumeria flowers are used to make leis and a scented oil in a number of Pacific islands including Hawaii” — http://www.missouribotanicalgarden.org/gardens-gardening/your-garden/plant-finder/plant-details/kc/d451/plumeria-rubra.aspx
