This is a female Blue Dasher (dragonfly, Pachydiplax longipennis). Not very blue, right? It’s the males that are blue. This female was perched on our Knockout Rose bush. I have yet to see a dragonfly actually catch prey, but it’s clearly not an uncommon event. According to my insect field guide, “Each individual can consume about 300 small insects a day.” That’s a lot of bugs!
