i think that i will make this year the year when i learn how to properly use lighting. this kind of sucks because of the shadows and i used two lamps plus an overhead lamp to shoot this tiny vase and earrings, as well the reflection of the lights on the beads are hideous. methinks this is the portion of photography that i would have to read on.
last friday of dorrena ortega's pale blue january. i kind of like having a colour theme for at least one day a week. maybe i'll do red for february. or black. :-)
thank you, my friends, for your kind views and comments as i greatly value and appreciate them. now i go catch up on your albums.
I think that your lighting here is just beautiful ... the earrings are my favorite colors. Since I only shoot outside, lighting becomes so important and difficult at the same time. It all depends on the day, the weather and the timing. VERY hard. I don't want to do many indoor shots, but would like to learn more about flashes, etc. I will try to read and study more too.
I don’t think it sucks. I think lighting is the most complex aspect of photography and also the most important. I have a really good book on the science of lighting I’ve been reading, although I temporarily set it aside because my brain started hurting. This is well composed and l love the colors!
@lisjam1 - pray tell the title of that book and let my brain hurt some more. :-) i was hoping i could make the beads more defined but the shadows just bug me. thank you, lisabell.
@karenann - thank you, KA, but i think the shadows are kind of distracting. i do! you like these earrings? i bought them on sale - three pairs for ten bucks. i have no use for them except for photographing so if you want them, just let me know, i'll send you them. guess what i did today. :-)
I think it is beautiful and you do a fantastic job in your photography. I think we are always our worst critiques. I think that is going to be one of my goals too.
Well that is one of the great things about doing something like 365 we all get the chance to try new things and become better photographers because of it. Nice shot as always my friend
Well here's another county heard from- I see what you see in the lighting- perhaps too many light sources and the fact that you're shooting from overhead. But for me the most distracting thing is that the vase and earrings do not stand out from the background- everything seems to be in the mid-range. I wouldn't know how to instruct you on compensating for that- it's the kind of thing I'd be fiddling around the house with until I found the right place for it and the right things to put with it. So that helped a lot, didn't it? (o:
i like your shot a lot but i think i would want to try to get more light to shine through the jewelry instead of on top of it so that it would show how iridescent it is. i, too, like the colors very much and believe you did an excellent job.
I don't find the shadows distracting but that is just me; I do light the light reflected in the little pearls, it is a fabulous concept and I'm sure you will revisit to make it 'right'
I like thecolor and softness but think it needs more contrast, more dark to the shadows more light to the reflections. It feels flat without something that stands out. Maybe you'd be interested in the flash of red February. Lighting becomes more important without a lot of color I think
I find lighting inside really challenging, so not sure I have a lot of tips to give...something to bring out the see through quality of the earrings. But other than try & error I don't have a systematic approach to this!!
iLife the color theme idea! Ad this doesn't suck! I am with KarenAnn.. @karenann I shoot outside most of the time. I have no clue about lighting and reflectors. I want to learn but I also need a speed lite to get started
I think it's beautiful and I would sure wear these pretty things. I do agree it's better to shoot outside, but sometimes their are to many things that take away from the picture.
