orange is the colour of gluttony - day seven of the seven deadly sins challenge

“A big man is always accused of gluttony, whereas a wizened or osseous man can eat like a refugee at every meal, and no one ever notices his greed.” - Robertson Davies (Canadian Journalist and Author, 1913-1995)

i admit, i often indulge in gluttony, or something bordering on gluttony. it used to be that i could eat that entire plate and order more at the "all you can eat sushi" restaurant. (i had since decided i'd cut off rice and other carbohydrates from my diet). in my twenties, there was a restaurant in manila where i grew up that had a tempura shrimp contest. i was a daily winner, having eaten 327 shrimps. the daily winners met on the saturday to see who became the weekly winner. the weekly winner beat me by just 3 shrimps - he ate 315 and i ate 312 pieces. all in one sitting. he was the monday winner and i won on the thursday, so i was still digesting my 327. in my first job, i was once the subject of a bet, for eating a big tub of ice cream, also in one sitting. shame and defeat came to those who bet i couldn't do it. bah, i remember i even ate a nine-inch pizza afterwards. if boys or men wanted to date me, they should be able to afford to bring me to dinner. the money spent on food is always money well spent. for someone who used to weigh 100 pounds, i could eat a large cut of steak, the big man's portion, and finished off all sides and condiments.

i used to explain that this gluttonic habit must've stemmed from growing up rat-poor and that i was compensating for all those years when we didn't have anything to eat.

but this glutton habit had eased as i grew older, mindful of its effects on my health. thankfully, i am free of any sickness. the last decade, i had developed lactose intolerance so i don't eat ice cream anymore. but the glutton in me sometimes would win and i would have a small cup of ice cream, tempting fate and knowing the consequences.

my name is summerfield and i used to be a glutton (sometimes, i still am).

there goes the week's seven deadly sins, folks. if you must excuse me, i need my midnight snack now.

thanks, @meggageg. you know my sisters had become allergic to seafood, too. as i don't eat meat anymore, i'd die if i would be allergic to seafood, too. i mean what will i eat then? LOL.

wow -- great picture/color/composition to describe glutton! And I loved reading your story -- girl, you could pack away the shrimp (and food)! And I understand the poor part, the fear of starving that doesn't leave you. Too bad about the ice cream.....but there are other foods to be had!! Love this series that you did! Love your creativity and fun!!!

I would definitely eat 312 shrimps in one sitting. Yummmm.... This is a brilliant gluttony shot and your commentary makes it even more so. Well done on keeping healthy and that healthy appetite may have been what you needed at the time.

great shot, love the story, and understand the urge. i, too, and lactose intolerant and can't seem to stay away from ice cream. told my doctor, have this ache in my belly, what is wrong? she said, stop having that bowl of ice cream every night, it might go away! damn if it didn't and 10 pounds, too, but now, if i eat it, boy-oh-boy, do i pay for it. before all i had was that belly ache. now? won't go into it. . .

great shot...LOVE sushi...and I could eat a lot of shrimp too so gluttony might be 'my' sin (well these days...might have been something else in the past!!) and I did give up carbs but I got really sick and then developed diabetes so I have to eat carbs these days to keep my blood sugar levels stable

@jannkc - thanks, jann. i find that for food, the Nikon takes on the natural colour. my other camera doesn't do that.

@russianblue - they were small shrimp :-)
