unfinished projects by summerfield

unfinished projects

today started out with promise: beautiful sunrise, blue skies. by ten thirty it was gloomy as the heavy clouds had set in and by eleven it was raining. i tried to put some semblance of order in my drawers and cabinets (epic fail) and came upon these unfinished cross stitch projects from seventeen or so years ago. heaven knows i tried to finish these, in fact i almost finished the flapper project about 4 years ago but i ran out of thread and it was reason enough to not pursue it. but i won't let go, thinking one day, i'll get my creative groove back and would finish it.

my young niece is coincidentally into cross stitching. when i asked her if she would like to finish any of the projects she readily said yes. knowing the work will be done correctly, i decided to give them to her to finish. then i gave her all my remaining DMC threads and everything cross stitch.
How cool are those! ~ I have a pile of unfinished projects too. These are beautiful!

wow -- those are beautiful! I haven't done counted cross-stitch in YEARS.....now I would need a huge magnifying glass to do any project....! And I have a few unfinished ones, too....hmmmm. Beautiful work there!!

@sanera @cscecil
i had made a number of beautiful and complicated cross-stitch projects, maybe almost thirty or more, but i only have 4 hanging in my walls. mostly i gave them away as gifts, for weddings, house warming, etc. i know i won't be able to do cross stitch again so i gave my niece those three. i have a fourth one which i know is kicking around somewhere.

thankyou for your comments, ladies. much appreciated.

Ok , to start with I like the pictures of this work, I really like that fact that you shared this project with the niece. A part of you and her will be in this work. How cool is that

These are really beautiful. Love the arrangement of the composition . . I tried to do a piece once and finally gave it to a friend. So nice to have someone in the family finish and cherish it. Wonderful keepsakes!

@sarasdadandmom - i suppose that's very cool! she was still a little girl when i started these projects and i told her at the time that since i don't have a child of my own, she gets to inherit all my cross stitch projects. well, she's happy tonight when she went home, holding the unfinished projects. thank you, terry.

@karenann - thank you, karenann. as you can discern by now, i am a jack of all trades and a master of none.

@summerfield You are a kind woman to do that, I am sure a little bit of your heart went with them. She will remember that act of kindness forever.

It's great that your niece will finish your projects. They are beautiful! I cross-stitch sometimes. It's very relaxing.

Great projects- I had a cross-stitch phase, but haven't had time recently (and the parrots would most likely try to eat it!). Your pics look a bit neater than mine. I'm sure your niece will love them!

whew, you just opened a new album, i thought for a minute you changed your account. nice to get the projects finished!

Great shot of the projects! I also have a drawer of these someday projects.

Amazing! I really love these projects!

What a great idea to pass them on- now they'll be finished and also be a family treasure too. Funny but in this picture they don't look unfinished! I think I've got some unfinished things packed in boxes in my attic. They ended up there when we moved into this house. I've wanted to pull all the boxes out of the attic and go through them again for 2 years now- let's just say the spirit is willing, the flesh is not! Nice capture and closure for your lovely handiwork.

Very pretty, nice that you had someone to finish them. I don't have the patience to do any cross stitching. In the past I did a lot of sewing (sewing machines have gas pedals lol).

@bkbinthecity - thanks, brian. lots of project ideas brewing in my head but nothing definite yet.

@steeler - thank you, howard. my niece has the right thinking that it's quite productive to do something else while watching football or hockey.

@myautofocuslife - when i learned to cross stitch, work at the office somehow became bearable. thank you, livia.

@sunnygreenwood - yes, anne, i have two albums now. (more work). i thought that girl would never get around to liking cross stitch. i was ready to bring the unfinished projects to the salvation army. thank you, anne.

@alia_801 - i would still want to do cross stitch but not these days. maybe when i'm a little bit 'older' :-) thank you, alia.

@jannkc - i have one storage full of someday projects, too! thank you, jann.

@lianasaarepera - thank you, liana. and welcome to 365.

@olivetreeann - oh, i assure you, ann, they are unfinished. the flapper's dress is incomeplete and the background has to be stitched in white, at least in the upper part. the waterfalls (middle) became too tedious because of the inclusion of metallic thread for the water part to make it look realistic. the right one is supposed to be the facade of an inn. it is basically finished but the outlining still needs to be done. i also intend to have all my old negatives scanned to positive image and two years ago i bought this thingamajiggs which i saw on the airplane's catalogue whilst travelling that you pass the negatives through and the positive images come out on your computer's screen. well, things happen and i have not yet started it. hahaha. as you said, the spirit is willing. thank you , ann.

@myhrhelper - i admire people who are able to use sewing machines. i don't know how to use it, even if my life depended on it. i swear, i even bought one a long time ago because the lady at the shop who sold it offered to give me sewing lessons for free. my problem is i could not remember how to thread the machine, it seemed really complicated. so sewing machine was shipped to the old country where a cousin now uses it for a living. thank you, kathy.

@danig - hey, mate. thank you. how's melbourne?
January 3rd, 2012
i meant to comment on this yesterday and got distracted by talking to malcolm about it! first off, what a lovely photo. really like how you presented them. i used to love doing these, too. i have some problems with the colors. i have to be very, very organized with the threads or i can have a real mess on my hands.
January 3rd, 2012
great idea to pass them on to someone to complete! they look really lovely :-)
January 3rd, 2012
@catsmeowb - thank you, camille. i have one hanging on my bedroom wall, a cross stitch of red poppies. i had interpreted the pattern differently and interchanged the three shades of reds but it still came out beautiful. i will have to talk to you at length about this problem with colours. i am so interested in a not so curious way though.

@patticake - thank you, patti. yes, i think i was holding on to them because i didn't want to waste the time and effort i put in them, even though i knew i would not be able to get them finished. thank heaven for nieces.
