When I think of Beaver Island, I think trillium -- it's revered in Michigan and especially on the island. This is one of about 6 trillium growing around our house. It's very exciting to see them as they kind of announce the arrival of spring. As an endangered species, they are protected by law against any human damage -- we aren't supposed to even transplant them (though rumor has it that people have done so). So, Jim and I know the six spots where ours 'live' and it's always great to see them back. The fuzzy backdrop captures the woods behind and the blue peeking through is the lake/sky.
If you view large, or look closely at the left leaf, you'll see the insect that is moving about our house in swarms, waiting to attack as soon as we leave the house! We need the wind to come up!
The Trillium is the provincial flower of Ontario. I have lots of them up at my other hideout in Quebec and actually moved some yesterday as they were about to be ripped out for an imminent garage construction! We get pink and red ones as well. Very pretty!
Beautiful! I was taught in the second grade, that it takes seven years for a trillium to flower. Don't know if that's true, but it explains why they're protected by law.
@kimshots Thanks Kim! I found out the bugs are called midges (though we think there are some mosquitoes mixed in). They continue to be such a nuisance! @darylo hey -- the wind worked a bit -- of course it also brought rain all day, but I appreciate the attempt to clear the bugs out for us!!
@archaeofrog Thanks Katie -- like the name evil skeeter! @ness50 Thanks Vanessa! @vankrey They are sort of big -- maybe 6" tall, and the leaves are about 3" each, so you can see them easily in contrast to some of the tiny wildflowers. I just love them too!
@jankoos@elisasaeter@brav Thanks Jan, Elisa, and Richard! @timandelke -- 7 years, wow -- that would totally make sense why they are 'untouchable' @judithdeacon I hadn't heard of them til we started coming up to the island. Then, it became a huge deal for me to find them.
