Today's Word of the Day is 'stars' so I had saved this shot to use. I took it while in Hawaii as the ambient light is so much less than what we have in Chicago. I clearly don't have the right settings -- ISO too low for one thing and probably aperture too small so shutter speed too long -- but I was excited about three things: (a) You can clearly see Orion's Belt -- the three stars slightly above center, (b) I caught more in the photo than my eye could see -- that reddish band was not visible to the eye, and (c) I could see the movement in the image -- that isn't camera shake making the stars into little lines!! I don't know how to stack photos so this is one shot, 60.7 seconds long, using a tripod on the beach away from as many lights as I could get. Oh, besides the three stars, the rest of Orion is suggested by the brightest stars that form a sort of rectangle around the best, on an angle in from the edges. It's odd to see it on an angle the way it is here. If curious about what it is supposed to look like, here's an article: http://www.space.com/16659-constellation-orion.html
Wow... it looks like the light pollution was next to nothing there. I really like how you have picked up the colours of the stars like the really bright red one. I had no idea that the word of the day was stars... that was a total fluke on my part... will go and add the tag now! lol
@gazbadger I wondered if that bright red one was an airplane going by and that perspective playing with our eyes made it look like it was part of the night sky. Otherwise, I really wonder what it was -- an alien ship or something!! Thanks for commenting -- funny you didn't know the word of the day when you did the shot!
Nicely done. I had a heck of a job with white balance when I tried a night time shot. I think you will find the red blur is a wispy cloud moving in the breeze.
Wonderful shot. I have tried a few times to get such shots with no success. I guess I never found a place without too much light pollution. Must venture out and give it a go. Well done...I like the narrative too
