Another dragonfly from today's flurry of activity around our house. There were so many of them and a few would occasionally stop on a leaf or stem. The trick was being ready to shoot as they never stayed there for long!
Amazing Taffy. The detail in this is wonderful. Fav Tried what you suggested, it didn't work. Think I shall have to invest in a tripod as they seem to know when I stop the camera to move my shoulder and arm. That's when they land! They're as contrary as birds!
Well, you seem to have conquered the trick of getting them! Amazing clarity, again, from your macro lens. I only have a macro filter which gives around a 5x enlargement, and I found it quite difficult to get sharp focus on moving objects and even stationary objects without a tripod...don't know how you do it!
@jocasta Thanks Jocasta! It's a NIkon70-300mm/f5.6 zoom. I really like the lens but it's limited re lower light settings. It's great on a sunny day, though. I have Nikon's 70-200mm/f2.8 zoom, but rarely use it even when it's called for re lighiting, as it's so heavy it really needs a tripod all the time.
@ericdibosco I actually took this one with my telephoto set to 300mm. It was a sunny enough day to I could get the shutter speed up enough to make it work. Macro usually provides a much more clear focus, but this worked well to get in close.
@ceilidh Don't get discouraged -- though a tripod is very useful, but then it's bulkier for following the insects around. Always a tradeoff! Did you try upping your ISO to get a really fast shutter speed? I can't remember my exact suggestion.
Great shot!! So incredibly clear, and with that light on its eyes!! A definite FAV!! Funny thing is I love dragonflies, but I don't think I have ever seen one live! This is probably as close as I am ever going to get to one! Thanks! :-))
