This is one of Colorado Springs' iconic areas, a city park that you can't cover in a single day of hiking. I had posted 2 photos from a walk I did on Saturday with my mom. http://365project.org/taffy/365/2014-10-04 http://365project.org/taffy/the-also-ran-ph/2014-10-04
On Sunday, my brother gave me a 'ride' in his little aerobatic plane so I could take photos, we'd hoped, of the fall colors on Pike's Peak. But there were none -- everything was green. My photos didn't come out that well, but I thought this made an interesting companion shot to those on-the-ground.
For scale, the little squares in the lower right and the greenery are large homes and a golf course.
We love to photograph Garden of the Gods. It's an amazing place. Can you imagine being the first people to see it? I've never seen it from this high up though. What a wonderful opportunity and a great shot!
PS: you should take the cog railway up Pike's Peak sometime if you haven't done it. The photo ops are many, and it's a hoot besides. I do find breathing at 14,000 feet to be a challenge, but there are hot donuts at the top.
@khrunner Thanks for the views and the lead on the train. I haven't done it. My sister-in-law does the Pike's Peak Marathon (has run it 6 times) and I found breathing at 6000 feet hard! I'll probably be back in January...does the train run in the winter?
@taffy It's supposed to run all winter, although they say there may be times the track is impassable. We have been meaning to take it in the winter, but haven't had the opportunity yet. They just started the winter trips a year or so ago. WOW - I'm impressed that your s-I-law has run the marathon and repeatedly. We haven't done it yet, and I'm afraid never will at this point in time. I've always wanted to do the ascent at least. I do fine until about 12,000 feet, but I live at about 5400. It makes a difference.
Wow how wonderful to view from such a height! I have never heard of the Garden of the Gods, so it's interesting to see. Those properties do look rather large.
What a great opportunity to get some arial shots. This looks like a great place to hike in. It would have been great to see the fall colours. Maybe next time.
@maggiemae We were right side up the whole time! That was a promise I had him make to me. I'm quite a white-knuckle flyer and went up with him last winter for the first time in the 30 years he's been flying -- that's what 365 has done for me! It's a nimble, bright yellow little plane with barely any room. Since he also is a glider pilot, I felt safer since I figured if the engine went out, he'd know how to glide us in!
What a great pov! Wonderful opportunity to be able to fly in the plane to get this view. I am not sure I would be brave enough - such a scarcely cat am I!
