A few of you have asked how construction is coming along. We had a chance to visit today to meet with the people helping with interior stuff. For those who are interested in the Nov 9-10 event that led to this, a brief summary is at http://365project.org/taffy/365/2014-11-10 -- now we are in construction phase. I thought the ladders made for an interesting b&w if only this were not our actual house!
Update on the fire: Good things first --
1. Great contractor choice and progress on construction is consistent
2. Electricity lines are back in, new trusses, some walls
3. Insurance has approved replacement of appliances and kitchen cabinets due to smoke and debris, which is a relief as it was too disgusting to think about using what was there even if it had been 'cleaned.'
4. Decorator is going to help with floor plans and identifying potential furnishings or places for finding these things on our own.
5. We are so lucky to be living in such a wonderful temporary condo with a beautiful view and not having to shovel snow! And lucky to be living period!
Not so good, but not really bad...
1. Takes an inordinate amount of time to reconstruct and refurnish a home, especially when it wasn't something that had been planned.
2. It's weird to see our 'new normal' where we 'visit' our home but it looks like what you see above which is not close to being a home.
3. Irony of ironies...we will miss our temporary condo when we move home!
I do like the b and w in this taffy and I had been wondering but kept forgetting to ask! I imagine it'll take time to feel like home again. Glad mostly positive progress and that you're happy and comfortable where you are.
i really like this image.. It really reflects your love of lines and architecture.. and somehow that feels like a good sign... it will be your 'home' again
The ladders tell the story well! Remodeling is always stressful and I'm sure that's doubly so for you because of the circumstances that led to it.
Wishing you Best of luck and continued progress towards your goal of moving back into your home!
Great to see the progress, Taffy, and I'm glad for you about all the positives. You were quite right about this picture: all the lines and angles makes for a beautiful B&W
This makes for a beautiful B&W image Taffy!! Great lines and angles. I think it sounds so much more positive than negative and I feel really hopeful for you that one day soon this will feel like home again. But how exciting and new spruced up home!! How many of us decorate our homes but have to put back all the same old furniture and bits we have collected over the years. This is the opportunity to create something new and exciting and exactly what you want!! I know you will miss all those fabulous views but you will be ready to get back home soon enough!! Thinking of you and Jim!! The most important point you made was that you are both lucky to be alive!! Take care and enjoy your challenge!!
This is a lovely B& We image Taffy. I think that when you have ladders up in the reconstruction phase it is positive and exciting. rethinking / re planning layouts must be interesting you weren't too happy with the condo at the start but then you saw the wonderful views. Your house will feel strange when you first move back in but then it will develop that feeling of home.
I like this as a marker for the progress on reconstruction. Thanks for the update, Taffy! Your irony of ironies is one I've thought about frequently as you've posted stunning city scapes from your "temporary" quarters.
Of course, I have to FAV this because it is such a wonderful architectural shot, and because I like things under construction! Too bad it was not a planned renovation, but I think you will have a fabulous home at the end, and it will be worth all the heartache, the loss, and the wait. Glad you have good people to work with....the contractor and the interior designer sound like gems! And, yes, I suspect you will miss your condo and your views....think of it as a sabbatical and a house exchange!
so glad to see progress is being made 'at home' but loving your city skyline shots from your temporary space. (how ironic you will miss it!) I am sure it will be fun redesigning you home, as you so rightly say at least you are both here to do it!
This looks great in b&w with all the angles and lines. Your write-up sounds so positive, and I'm so glad it is going as well as it could. It will be lovely to make it your home again.
It probably feels like you are visiting someone else's home in a way! And how could you not miss that spectacular view? But all in all, when the dust settles and all the things that make your home, your home are in place, you will be quite happy with your "new" to you home I think. I agree with you too- this is an interesting shot with all the lines and textures.
Great shot! I like it when the good outweighs the bad! Thanks for including the summary of events. What an upheaval in your life! Glad to hear things are going in the right direction.
Very cool shot...love the composition and the b&w. Wow..this is really a total renovation. Really stresses how lucky to have you all safe and sound and that possessions are just "things"...will be so lovely. What is the estimated time to completion. And you are right...at least you don't have to shovel snow!!! ;)
@eyesmile Yes, it is almost total -- the total front half of our place, plus refinishing floors and new drywall in the back half. So essentially everything structural is new or totally refreshed, and all furniture in the front half has to be replaced. Overwhelming but I do think once we are into it, having a new place in the end will be good. They're telling us between May and June is the target move-in date. I'm guessing June, just the way things have gone so far. We'll be sad leaving our temporary place - we've come to love the view, the layout, lack of stairs, ease of living which really does work well for us as we think about age!
I love this shot Taffy which works great in black and white, love all those lines, instant fav. Glad to hear of your progress, things always more time than one thinks.
This sure makes a great B&W shot, Taffy. I just cannot imagine going through what you have and will continue to do, start over. It is mind boggling. I am so glad you have such a wonderful place to live and have so many good things happening with your home. Sure does take time. You have made me appreciate what we have and realize we do not need anything but each other as it could have been so much worse if one or both of you were injured or killed in the fires of that day. I have been watching today from my front window as my next door neighbor hired someone to haul off most of her life minus so many missing things that were sold for drugs and all the trash and accumulated stuff that was left behind. Even the trash bins full of trash were taken as they smelled worse than anything I could imagine. Next the carpet and padding will come out. I took a few photos out my front window today but debated talking about what was a family home turned drug house and still debating.
Great black and white shot of this rebuilding process and like you said, just wish it wasn't your home, but you are safe and have a nice place to live and no snow to shovel so ... it does make for an interesting shot with the ladders!!!
@darsphotos It's tough to determine what is 'fair game' for photos and discussion, isn't it? Maybe once it's all over, you could create a collage that is a tribute of some kind to the lovely neighbor you had had before all this happened.
@taffy It is really hard to know what to put out in photos sometimes, well basically this time and what to say. I wish I had more photos of them though have some fun ones of their cat and ours that I will have to find. Great idea. Thank you, Taffy.
