We've had a lightening show tonight and after who knows how many shutter clicks, I was able to get this one lone streak. The sky was much more dramatic, but this is the only lightening I've ever been able to capture, so must post! It's not great, but I'm still quite excited about it!
Did you shoot that from your balcony?! That was really brave of you, and great kudos for trying . I think lightning shots are like fireworks, you get one chance to get your settings right, and then you have to wait for the next one to happen! Very spooky sky! I almost feel that you should have cropped it all the way to the right where the light is....the building on the lower left is distracting and superfluous!
I think long exposures work best for lightening. I think I remember someone on here who had great shots saying he set up for long exposures and then just kept clicking.
Wow! An awesome sky. In the good old days of film, I used to sit in the dark, put the camera on bulb setting and place a piece of card over the front of the lens and remove it when there was a good showing of lightning bolts. You could do this several times before over exposing lit buildings. Not that it gave me a great deal of success either!
Beautiful! And I am envious - I was on the balcony the night before, trying to photograph lightning over our town... But we only ended up having ones that would just lit up a half of sky, and the picture - although the lighting itself was pretty spectacular - would end up just like dark tree silhouettes with a bright sky. No streaks, no broken lines, just a general giant flash. So, I like this one very much.
@eyesmile Thanks Gena...you're right about mixed feelings. Our lease ends here July 17th, so the house HAS to be done by then and it should be. But, we've learned we like the single story so have started moving ahead with plans to make a move sometime in the fairly near future. But it's complicated, of course. The condo when done should look beautiful, so we may feel differently once we are back in an actual neighborhood. We'll see.
How I envy you even the opportunity to practice! IF there's a hint of rain (which currently seems to be about "never") we MIGHT get a clap of thunder...pretty anti-climatic! This is wonderful!
