Mrs S and I were having lunch on the lawn today when this chap decided to pay us a visit, passing by on the grass. By the time I had gone inside to fetch a camera, he had decided to sun himself on the deck of the summer house. He's a Garter Snake about 1.2 metres long - I say about, because I didn't take a tape measure to him!
@janiskay They will bite although they are not venomous, but what they are far more likely to do is to musk, much like a skunk; the smell is very acrid and difficult to get rid of on the short term, so best avoided.
Fantastic pic! A garter snake appeared in my hosta garden the other day but I didn't get near the nice shot that you got of this one. I keep hoping he'll reappear and give me another chance.
