The giraffe's at the Santa Barbara Zoo are understandably a popular attraction, and quite popular, too, with Michael, the male in the enclosure! (This is one of the females) New babies come along quite regularly, and an interesting bit of information is that the babies have to be sent to other zoos by the age of one before they become too tall to travel!
On this day they all came close to see the people there to watch them, and what amazing photo opportunities we all had! I have close-ups, but I liked this one a bit at a distance.
I like their purple tongue. Did you know it is purple to protect it from getting sunburned on the hot African plains when it is grazing in the tree tops? Just a factoid from a book by Steve Jenkins called Creature Features.
@allie912 I did know that! I have a habit of attending zoos, even when we travel, and I love to read about the animals as we go! If that's a children's book, I'll look for it...have some little birthdays coming up!
I love giraffes and this is such a beautiful lady! She has the most gentle enquiring face! A gorgeous capture Louise showing her fabulous markings! I am really looking forward to visiting the zoo in Chicago as its ages since I visited a zoo. Your beautiful pics make me want to go even more! Fav!
@pamknowler You're going to have such a wonderful time at either of Chicago's zoos! They're both fabulous! I still remember and marvel that Sarah and I were at either end of the tiger enclosure, our paired photos with the identical time stamp, and we hadn't seen each other!
I've heard there's a zoo across the province in NS, but I don't imagine it's very big. Still, might be a nice drive and a curiosity to see! (The man who does our carpentry has never been out of NS, and that's the only zoo he's ever been to!)
