I can never tell Herons from Egrets but we saw 6-8 of them in a small pond on private property (of course) so I couldn't get close to them. On my first try we drove into the cemetary next to the pond and I tried to shoot through a chainlink fence with timber in front of it.....no good! So I had my husband drop me off in front of the house next to the pond so I could get out.....I tried from the road but it was too far away so I did go down in their ditch and worked my way up as close as I could without totally drawing attention to my trespassing. The birds were still probably 50 yds away so it's the best I could do with my close but no cigar 70-300mm lens. Maybe I'll win the lottery tonight so I can order that 200-400mm! :).
