On January 21st I saw an article about the sale of a photo of a potato for over one million dollars. The sale came about when a wealthy buyer who collects Kevin Abosch’s work was visiting the photographer’s Paris home in 2015. They saw the photo — a 162x162cm print mounted on dibond — hanging on the wall and inquired about purchasing it for their collection. The price was non-negotiable: €1,000,000, or about $1,083,450 (755,149.00 £) with today’s exchange rate. The buyer agreed to the price and purchased the photo, making it Abosch’s largest sale of a single image to date.
Here is a link to the story of the sale: http://petapixel.com/2016/01/21/this-photo-of-a-potato-sold-for-over-1000000/
Then I got to thinking about starting a challenge giving the talented photographers on the Project an opportunity to top Abosch's photo.
So, here is the challenge: Starting today January 26th and ending Saturday February 6th at 12 noon EST. submit your best photo of a potato. All photos must be taken during the time of the challenge. Voting will start February 6th and end February 10th.
Tag your photos; "milliondollar-challenge". In addition to tagging your image, please post your photo to this thread, too. It helps keep this thread active. That means it will show up on the discussion lists to the right of the home page. It also helps bring in more participants! Be creative and have fun!

[Fine print] No there won't be a million dollar purse. Only bragging rights!
Potato portraiture is something I exhausted last year, so unfortunately I won't be entering this nicely conceived competition. However, to help people to understand the very high level of photographic excellence that they will have to achieve, I post this, my best potato portrait of last year.
I LOVE this idea!!! I had fun with an onion last year but had to wait til it had sprouted. Now am sad my husband just used up the last 2 potatoes that were 'about to go'. Darn!! Will try to come up with something.
@la_photographic why don't we treat it like the favorites for the week? When time is up ask people to post their favorite in the thread so there is more visibility.
this is a sweet potato. In New Zealand we call them kumera. Way more interesting looking than your plain old spud.. although i have to admit, you can't beat a roast potato. yum.
@vickiesampson to the right of the star below your picture are three little dots, click on them and highlight the code in the box. Right click on it and choose copy, click on the box at the bottom of this thread and hit paste. When you hit post reply the picture will show up
I'm new so I have some questions. I uploaded a phone with the tag for this discussion; but I don't see it when I click on the link that shows all the photos. also, how do I upload it here to this tread as you suggested?
OK, here's mine... a potato "boudoir" shot, for heaven's sake! Thanks for the push. I would NEVER have thought that I would shoot a potato in partial undress. ;)
@skipt07 this is one of the most 'out-there' threads we have had in ages! thanks for inspiring so many off-the-wall images! :) here is my po(r)t(r)a(i)to
@ltodd - Thank you very much Lyn! I was hesitant at first being somewhat worried that it wouldn't be accepted. Boy was I wrong! I am glad that it got the creative juices flowing!

Potatoes, a poor man's meal. Doesn't need to cost a million :)
Cauliflower is the new potato
and here's one i did for @projectx
Here is my picture. Although now I look at it - it needs a big dollop of butter or sour cream.
That's it my last ever potato shot...promise!
What a wonderful idea, Skip. Maybe we'll get paid mega money for our potato pictures. LOL I'm going to have to think of some potato ideas. :)
Fantastic and humorous entries so far :-)
