Prickles.

I thought the spines on this hedgehog were rather pretty...unfortunately she was dead !
Absolutely gorgeous texture and color tones ... but evokes sadness too. Wonderful photo tribute to a gorgeous creature, Pat.

Beautiful details and colors and ouch, so sorry she is dead

How sad, but nice colour tones, all that clement weather and then the cold snap, after it came out from hibernation :-(

Oooops!!!! But very cool pic Pat!

So sad that the hedgehog is not a survivor...but those spines are amazing! Fabulous detail and clarity.

What a really interesting arrangement of spines..............at least you could get close!!( Saw a chap the other day on the side of the road photographing a dead badger)................super colours Pat

Awwwww - poor Mrs Tiggywinckle!

@cleanfreak @peggysirk Sorry to say she was attacked, so survived the winter but was caught crossing the lawn last night. We are hoping our dog Tui had nothing to do with it when she went out last thing last night !!!

You named your dog after one of our native birds. Is he/she black with a parsons collar? (Notice I am not mentioning the poor mauled hedgehog.)

Great focus and colours. Awww poor thing.

how sad...hedgehogs simply reflect childhood..for me..and on a note..my camera is like a ladies handbag never far away..though i do not think i have quite danced around it yet..but it does depend on the bubbles blown or is that drunk..

this is a good close up shot Pat. It you went in even closer it could go very abstract :)

Hmmm poor hedgehog, that's quite saddened me :(

had to enlarge to see the detail than read your story

@farmboy9155 Yes she is Darrell all black with a white bit under her chin. She was definitely named after your Tui bird & not the beer !! I hope she was innocent but don't think so !!

@tsingtao Ha !!!

@phil_howcroft Yes we were very sad to see too Phil, love to see hedgehogs & they are so good for the garden !

We haven't any hedgehogs here - only porcupines. Are hedgehog quills hard or soft-ish? How would a dog get one and not be stuck? Porcupine quills are HORRIBLE and require pliers and a trip to the vet.

Great colours and detail. I don't know that I've ever seen a hedge hog before
April 12th, 2012
You're right, they make a great abstract pattern. Shame it's an ex-hedgehog, such gentle little creatures.
April 12th, 2012
Awesome, and that would hurt! Yikes.
April 12th, 2012
Great pattern but a high price to pay
April 12th, 2012
@bpaquette I think they are quite soft compared to a porcupine Barbara but usually they curl up when attacked into a round ball but this poor little thing had its face bitten !!! I was so sorry when I saw what had happened !
April 12th, 2012
Just now seeing this photo and the other one you posted. How sad. I hope it stops happening.

not sure if you remember the porcupine quills that my dogs go into... very expensive ordeal and two surgeries for my male... having said that, they are very interesting animals!!
April 13th, 2012
@shepardx2 Sounds very painful & also expensive Margo !!!

Love the colours and pattern. Death is part of life.

Would you have thought about taking a picture of a dead hedgehog before joining 365? The things we do! Poor little thing :(
April 14th, 2012
Similar to the spikes on our Porcupines/ echidnea.
