When mum and dad got married in '57, they had no money. Mum's engagement ring was the ring on the right, and had belonged to dad's mother. Mum lost the ruby from the centre once, and had it replaced, and the back of the ring is paper thin now. In the 80's dad bought her a new ring - the one on the left. It is still like new. She never really wore it, always preferring her original engagement ring, however battered and bruised it was. Today I have the old ring and my daughter has the 'new' one. Let's hope they both live on to tell other stories in the future. For Flash of Red February, final week.
Beautiful and precious. I can understand why your Mum loved the first one so much.
I do wonder sometimes when I see high settings of some current engagement rings how they will survive the journey of life!
How lovely. My Mum and Dad married in 1940 and being during the war she did not have an engagement ring. During the 1970's my Dad was diagnosed with Cancer and he bought my Mum a lovely sapphire and diamond ring. He passed in 1976 sadly. My Mum wore this ring until I re-married in 2000 and she gave it to me. I did not wear it as it was way too big, but kept it safe......not safe enough unfortunately as we were broken into and burgled and we both lost all our jewellery including her ring. The Police were unable to recover any of it and I was more upset by the loss of her ring than any of mine.
A beautiful story & two precious rings. My first engagement ring got lost when I was feeding the hens years ago....I shouldn’t have been wearing it at all but had been out. Harry bought me another exactly the same style only better but it was years before I took to it like the original. So many times I looked for that ring. These days I consider the ring I wear now to be my proper one but it did take a long time not to think of it as a replacement.
