Double collared Sunbird by ludwigsdiana

Double collared Sunbird

during the different stages of moulting, beginning and end result.
Each shot is wonderful in itself. But to see them all together is even better. I have taken photos of hummingbirds and marveled at how they can change their colors like that in front of our eyes. There is a very interesting video (on YouTube, I think) about how hummingbirds change their colors. It is because, their feathers are not pigmented. Rather they change physically and the colors change by refraction. It was quite fascinating and explains things much better than I ever could. Your photos illustrate that phenomenon wonderful. Great job.

Must be sad to see all that beautiful plumage disappear. Does it take a year for it to return?

That's quite a transformation. I'd love to see them in mating plumage, but I guess they will have moulted by the time we arrive.
