HMAS Assault site by onewing

HMAS Assault site

This afternoon David, Nicki and I had a Time Team moment exploring the World War 2 site of HMAS Assault in Nelson Bay.

David has been processing a copy of the wartime blueprint of the site, so we went to see what remains of buildings we could identify.

This appears to be the remains of the base of the victualling store. There would have been a wooden structure on top of this base.

Nearby there is a plaque bearing the following inscription: On this site HMAS Assault was commissioned in 1942. RAN personnel trained here as boat crews for landing craft and served in the South West Pacific area in the landing ships HMAS Manoora, HMAS Westralia and HMAS Kanimbla.

Respect to all the soldiers that trained there and went on to fight!

@gamelee @derekvickers @elaine55 @joluise @dekky740 @paulaw @lafish Thanks everyone. Sorry to group you all together today, but I have just got back from a walk getting my photo for today and now I have got to do some housework ugh!
This wasn't the best photo in the world, but it told the story of our day yesterday and it was really interesting walking around the parkland at Fly Point searching for remains of the Navy site.

Check out @winnedreamer (Nicki) she was with David and I. I have just noticed that I appear in her second album of 365 for yesterday too, sitting in the giants chair!!! I don't think I will ever grow up.''Lunch time now and then ironing.

@humphreyhippo Thanks. I know it isn't the best picture in the world, but it was a record of the day and we had fun walking round with the original blueprint map superimposed on top of the Google maps picture to find the remains of the sites which were there during the war. It was a fun day.
