Stroviols Player by onewing

Stroviols Player

Friday 'People' day and I took this photo at the Tocal Peek into the Past open day a couple of weeks ago.

This chap was one of the entertainers playing a Stroviols which is a trade name for a horn violin or violinophone - a violin that amplifies its sound through a metal resonator and metal horns rather than a wooden sound box as on a standard violin.

The instrument is named after its designer, John Matthias Augustus Stroh, an electrical engineer in London, who patented it.

I am trying desperately to catch up today, so if I haven't got round to your photo yet I promise I will get there soon.

Thanks again for your lovely comments on my photos, sorry I haven't replied individually to each of you. I just need a few more hours in a day at the moment.

I love this "people picture" but am immensely intrigued by the instrument. I haven't seen one of these before and would like to hear it. I wonder if it sounds a bit tinny compaed with the mellow tone of striings and wooden box.

Here it is again. Not the best sound in the world which is probably why not many people have heard of it.

Such an interesting instrument Babs......love to hear different music specially out doors!
Don't worry about replying to each & every one of us Babs....I gave that up long since & only comment on certain comments that ask something or if I feel I want a chat about something that person has brought up. Just impossible to keep up & seriously taking up all my evening...something had to give & I just hope people understand!

What a thing to think of! I saw one once years ago but can't remember where. Thanks for reminding me !

He has a slightly bemused look on his face. Thanks for the info on the instrument, I didn't know that. Don't worry about the comments, most of us are in the same boat.

Lovely candid portrait!
August 23rd, 2014
Cool instrument. Lovely candid or was he smirking at you?
August 23rd, 2014
@kathiecb Well spotted Kathie, no he wasn't smirking at me. As I took the picture a young American visitor who was listening to the music too said "WTF is that". So that could have been the reason for the smirk. ha ha.
