I thought I would stay with the Newcastle theme at the moment and post one of the rather hidden old buildings in the centre of town.
I hope this gorgeous building stays and doesn't get swallowed up with all the new high rises around it.
The building was designed by leading Newcastle architect, Frederick Menkens in 1892 and was originally called Woods Chambers. It was built as offices and wine auction premises for Joseph Wood, who was a successful wealthy businessman.
Later the building was purchased by the Longworth Family who established it as the intellectual centre of Newcastle.
As the Longworth Institute, it was used as an art gallery, library and musical recital hall with its imbedded sound proofing between floors it provided for excellent acoustics for the performers.
The premises also operated as the Air Force Club for a period of time before the building fell into disrepair.
Longworth House as it is now known has been transformed into a softly lit wine bar complete with old fashioned armchairs and fancy chandeliers. It is a perfect setting for wedding parties etc.
Very kind but the travel is unfortunately impossible, Babs - perhaps you will come to England some time............
