It's Hot Again by onewing

It's Hot Again

It has been so hot today, even the currawong's are panting.

This currawong is so tame, he visits us daily and takes raw meat from our hands. His Mrs isn't quite so tame though she sits in the frangipani bush and you have to throw food to her.

Unfortunately this pair of currawong's are feeding three channel billed cuckoos. The cuckoos get rid of the currawong eggs and lay their own eggs in the nest of the poor unsuspecting currawongs.

Channel billed cuckoos have to be the ugliest birds I know and the three babies are bigger than the currawongs feeding them.

I bet this chap will be glad when the kids have left home.
Beautiful bird, I love watching them and listen to their songs when I was in Australia a few month ago.

SO clear, down to the little feathers on it's chin/beak.

A fabulous image and detail thanks for info too

Great capture, yet am saddened that he and his mate's brood is unlikely to reach maturity. Nature takes no prisoners and the cuckoos, always taking advantage of other birds in the breeding season, are some of the worst offenders.
January 24th, 2017
You feed currawongs? Yuk birds.
This is a lovely close up though Babs (reluctantly).
January 24th, 2017
Great shot - how strange to bring up the cuckoos after what their parents did to their eggs, or do they just not realise? Interesting info though!
January 24th, 2017
Cuckoos must be lazy birds to do something like that. Not sure I've ever seen one either. I thought this guy was a crow. Are they a party of the crow family? Must be a nice feeling to have a while bird or animal take good from your hands. Nice close up 😊

Had to laugh at your story & the way you tell it Babs! Not funny for mum & dad currawong but I don't suppose they know they have been foisted with the wrong kids & will love the ugly little blighters regardless. Cuckoos are the same over here of course, murderers & squatters. Hot, hot I can't wait!
January 24th, 2017
@terryliv Oh Terry, go wash your mouth out, ha ha. Currawongs are beautiful birds. You should see the channel billed cuckoos they are feeding, they are the ugliest birds on earth.
January 24th, 2017
@onewing I agree, CBCs are ugly but . . . .
January 24th, 2017
It looks so like a member of the crow family, except for the yellow eye. Great shot.
January 24th, 2017
Sam
WOW that's interesting about the cuckoos - I didn't know that
January 24th, 2017
Interesting points of interest here about the birds😊Great capture Babs.
January 24th, 2017
Stunning close up feather detail in wonderful colour and light Babs:)
January 24th, 2017
@yaorenliu I love the currawong song too.
January 24th, 2017
@s4sayer It is sad Margo. This year and last year these two currawongs have drawn the short straw and reared channel billed cuckoos.
January 24th, 2017
@lyndamcg Channel billed cuckoo eggs look very similar to currawong eggs, so the poor unsuspecting currawongs don't realize until it is too late that their eggs have been eaten and replaced.
January 24th, 2017
I love his glossy plumage and lovely clear eye :)
January 24th, 2017
@paul10 Thanks Paul. Pied currawongs are distantly related to the crow family I think but they belong to the strepera family not corvus.
I love the song of the currawong and here is a link to let you know what they sound like. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SGod03UZpVo
Here is a pied currawong feeding a channel billed cuckoo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSu-4Rb0TNE
They are ugly sods aren't they and our currawongs are rearing three of these buggers.
January 24th, 2017
@happypat I think they probably feel they have drawn the short straw and even though they feed the cuckoos they must be terrified of them. Here is a link to a pied currawong feeding a channel billed cuckoo. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSu-4Rb0TNE
scary
January 24th, 2017
@inthecloud5 They are a distant relative of the crow family I think but they are strepera family not corvus
January 24th, 2017
a beautiful shot of him Babs. What a shame they have to raise the other birds
January 24th, 2017
great shot Babs...
January 24th, 2017
Stunning close up Babs & thanks for the link to the video...WOW...
January 24th, 2017
I wouldn't argue with him! He looks very dominant! Lovely picture.
January 24th, 2017
Great image
January 24th, 2017
A great close up with pots of detail Babs
January 24th, 2017
A great photo - I thought he was a crow too. Lovely to have him feeding out of your hand.
January 24th, 2017
Waw !! this is a great close-up Babs -- and like the others I first thought it to be a crow !!
January 24th, 2017
Love your focus, fav
January 24th, 2017
That's a vicious looking beak Babs. What a beady eye too. Great capture.
January 24th, 2017
Great shot. Interesting story.
January 24th, 2017
A super close up capture. Fav!! 😀
January 24th, 2017
Fantastic close-up and I loved those videos. Thank you. I see what you mean about the cuckoos being ugly. It's not surprising their natural parents don't want anything to do with them Fav.
January 24th, 2017
Great close-up
January 24th, 2017
Great close up details
January 24th, 2017
A great looking bird...Fav
January 24th, 2017
Excellent closeup and details
January 24th, 2017
Fabulous close up!
January 24th, 2017
Currawong is a great name! Never heard of it before. That beak looks very powerful
January 24th, 2017
Yikes that is a close shot of this. Such a large beak!!
January 24th, 2017
Great close up
January 24th, 2017
I saw these in Tasmania last year, they remind me of the evil ravens you see in horror movies
January 24th, 2017
Fantastic closeup and interesting info!
January 24th, 2017
Such great details! Fabulous shot!
January 24th, 2017
Wonderful shot, Babs.
January 24th, 2017
Very interesting story and love the detail in this bird Babs!
January 24th, 2017
Lee
Mesmerising eye.
January 25th, 2017
@julienne1 @sailingmusic Considering the size of the beak they are such dainty eaters and take food out of your hand really delicately.
January 25th, 2017
Great details.
January 25th, 2017
they have great eyes...not so nice to watch them panting in the heat. Impressive photo
January 25th, 2017
Great close-up! Sounds like your cuckoos are like our Cowbirds. They lay their eggs in other birds' nests with the same result. If I see them at my feeder, I chase them away.
January 25th, 2017
Those cheeky cuckoos! Pity the currawong doesn't cotton on when the offspring get bigger than the parents.
January 25th, 2017
That is so interesting.....and sneaky of them! Nature is so cool. Great shot!
January 25th, 2017
Not a great fan of currawongs, they only arrived here a few years back. But as for cuckoos, they're the pits. Great closeup BTW.
January 25th, 2017
@golftragic I love currawongs but hatethe channel billed cuckoos. I thought pied currawongs were native to Australia.
January 25th, 2017
Fab shot, beautiful and clear. I would love to see a picture sometime of the cuckoos if you can Babs? Poor birdie though - do you have a bird bath in the garden for them or is there water nearby that it can drink and bathe in?
January 25th, 2017
@stephanies Thanks Stephanie. I posted a youtube link above of a currawong feeding a channel billed cuckoo, but it isn't very clear. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iSu-4Rb0TNE

Here is a photo of a channel billed cuckoo http://www.survival.org.au/birds_channel_billed_cuckoo.php

Yes we do have a bird bath in the garden and there are also lots of waterways nearby for them to drink and bathe in.

January 25th, 2017
Aww, thanks Babs, I don't find them ugly but the noise....oh my gosh... that screeching would drive me a little crazy I think....
January 25th, 2017
Wow, such nice detail. Great shot Babs!
January 26th, 2017
Babs, great textures in the bird's feathers - and such an interesting narrative!
January 27th, 2017
I adore him!!! I love his face and blackness and natural attitude-y look. :) I wasn't familiar with currawongs and I'm happy to have googled him and learned a bit about him thanks to you!
