East Maitland Architecture by onewing

East Maitland Architecture

Yesterday was a beautiful day and we spent the day at Maitland.

I love taking photos of the old properties in East Maitland.

The top left picture in this collage is of the former Bank of Australasia. Top right is the former Farmer Hotel and stables, now a private residence.

The centre photos are of shops and a café.

The bottom left photo is of the George and Dragon pub and the bottom right building was formerly Smith's Flour Mill built in 1844.
A fabulous collage of these great buildings! We have a Maitland here too which looks very different 😉

Such a lovely collection of old buildings

Interesting to see these 'old properties' and now styles have changed. On this side of the world, they wouldn't be considered to be old. The construction of Paimpont Abbey commenced in 1199 ;-)

@s4sayer Our history as far as buildings go only goes back to the first fleet of 1788 unfortunately.

@louannwarren There are a few books available at the Historical Society about Maitland and its history.

@ludwigsdiana I think we all borrow place names from other places. A lot of our place names originate in the UK, but I believe Maitland was named after Sir George Maitland, Under Secretary for the Colonies.

@craftymeg @taffy @happypat Settlement of Maitland began in the 1800s and so the architecture will be similar. We see similar designs all across Australia from this period. Of course, our architectural history only goes back as far as 1788 when settlement in Australia began. Prior to this the Aboriginal people didn't build houses as they were nomadic hunter gatherers.

An excellent record of these wonderful old buildings Babs. So good to see that they're still in good nick and being used.

Love these old buildings, so much character

Great buildings- I'm glad they're still in use. Architecture today does not have the sense of art these buildings had. Now it's all about function.
