Another busy day today, cinema with friends this morning to see The Book Club, lunch in Nelson Bay and then I went to visit Elizabeth this afternoon in Regis Care Home. I do try to visit her once a week because she is missing John terribly.
This is another photo from Box Beach after the bushfire.
The picture on the left is of banksia seed pods and the picture on the right is of xanthorrhoea or black boy as it is commonly known. You aren't allowed to call them black boy these days though because it isn't politically correct.
Both plants will survive and regenerate pretty soon.
Well it is a black boy at the moment .. They are amazing how they recover after fire .. it will be green again in no time ... Did you enjoy the Book Club .. it's on the must do list..
Two beautiful images captured in lovely detail and and colour producing an interesting panel, as for the name change remember from your childhood Babs, Robinsons Marmalade motif its now referred to as either a "golly" and "golly doll":)
Bush fires regenerate the plants so beautifully in Australia, I have noticed. Lovely to see the life coming back up again.
Almost choked on my tea about the poitical correctness though!!!
The new growth after forest fires is really phenomenal, isn’t it?! These are great illustrative images. Would be wonderful if you could photograph them again in six weeks, I’m sure they will be green and growing!
I thought the photo on the left was of shells of sea barnacles or oysters. Black boy is a very attractive plan. No gollywogs allowed in the UK now although I have a friend who lives in Marton NZ, she has one in the bedroom we sleep in & is rather horrified when I tell her she would be prosecuted if she was found out in the UK. I must say though I do not like gollywogs, they are a bit like clowns, scary!
Fascinating plants! Had to "smile" at your comment about the name of plant #2. I was at a gathering recently where the speaker was "of color" and even he didn't know how to refer to himself! He very humorously said the way he used to be identified is no longer acceptable (Black American) but since he was born and raised here he really does not consider himself to be the "correct" term (African American). He shrugged his shoulders, smiled and said, "I don't care if I'm wrong- I'm a Black American!" to which the room responded with some chuckles and applause. I found it very interesting to learn your country struggles with the same over sensitivity to names.
@pcoulson Yes Peter I remember Robinson's gollywogs. I used to collect them to receive a golly badge.
@casablanca@olivetreeann The whole world has gone mad with political correctness these days, Can't help feeling that people should just toughen up. Reminds me of a cartoon I saw a while ago. A kid is in the library with a copy of Winnie the Pooh in his hand and he crossed out the word Pooh and wrote shit.
@happypat No golliwogs in the UK! They went a bit PC here with that for a while, but you can see them in shops again now. I have a few golliwogs in my house and teddy bears too. I love golliwogs. Agree with you about clowns though, still in therapy about them from childhood. Mum always took us to the circus and I was traumatised by the clowns. Not keen on anything with masks even if they are painted on. ha ha.
@pyrrhula I do try to visit Elizabeth once a week and sometimes take her out for a coffee or lunch too.
Mother Nature's powers of regeneration are truly amazing. BTW, I still call 'em black boys. I'm all for inclusive language but it's all gone too far IMO. How was the Book Club? I haven't seen it yet.
