The bushfire in Port Stephens is still at emergency level and along with fire fighters, a Boeing 737 air tanker is being used to try and control the bushfire at Campvale and Salt Ash by water bombing the area. So far over 1700 hectares (17 sq km) have been burnt out. Strong winds are really hampering the situation at the moment.
There is only one road in and out of our area and at present we are unable to leave The Bay because part of Nelson Bay Road is closed.
The bushfire isn't close to where I live, we are about 25 km from the fire zone, but last night I went to Sunset Beach at Soldiers Point, close to where I live, to see if I could capture a photo of the fires, this is the result.
I tried to capture the beauty of the setting sun against the beast of the fires.
A lovely capture but not a good event! Oh nooooo...not you too?!? The California fires are finally almost out. November has been a tough month for California. I hope its out sooner than later!
Beautiful capture of the setting sun. Too many bush fires going on - I have heard a lot about the fires in California which have caused the loss of many lives. I didn't know about this one.
Really frightening Babs, I wonder if anyone starting a fire like this ever gets panicky seeing what they have done? Such sad distruction & poor wild life! Great photo!
@casablanca Looking less smoky today. I was planning on going to Newcastle today, but I think I will give it a miss. The Nelson Bay Road is open again now I believe, but you can never trust fires and I wouldn't want to get stuck, not able to drive home.
@happypat I am not sure if this fire was deliberately lit or not, but the three fires in the same area in August were all deliberate so if this one was too I doubt the culprits panic at all. I think they think the bigger the better. I suspect we are in for a long summer as the two fires so far both in August and now have happened during cool but dry weather. As you know August is winter here in Australia so that fire was really unexpected. It has just been so dry here this winter and spring so we desperately need a lot of rain. Summer begins here in a weeks time.
My mind did not register the "clouds" as smoke at first. As noted above the US has had its share of fires too. I do hope your firefighters will get things under control quickly. I think many people in California will be lost and in a daze for months to come the fires there were so devastating. This is still a beautiful sunset- the beach lives up to its name.
Frightening how much devestation is caused by these fires and terrible that sometimes theyare deliberately lit. Hope they are brought under control very soon. Stay safe
