Yesterday I posted a photo of my great grandparents James and Martha taken in 1878 and here they are almost 30 years in 1907 with their 10 children.
I think this must have been at someone's wedding, but I have no idea whose.
The chap on the left with the flower in his lapel is my grandad also called James. I think James Jnr must be about 19 in this photo.
This is the last of my family photos for now hope you have enjoyed them. This photo was in a very bad state and I haven't been able to restore it any better than this.
I am a bit late posting tonight because I have been up to Boat Harbour with a friend of mine to do a spot of whale watching.
I will catch up with your photos later this evening after I have had dinner.
PS Just adding a postscript to this photo. James Snr died in 1924 age 67 of bladder cancer but Martha survived to the ripe old age of 93 and passed away in 1952. She was a tough soul and survived lots of hardship in her life.
What a great family image and you knew so much about it Babs, we have photographs of our relatives from way back and don't know much more than some of thier names:)
Lovely photos of your family history & it’s great to be able to pick out your grandfather. I’ve really enjoyed seeing your family. With all those sisters & the one brother your family must be quite large now. All spread out right into Australia!
I realise that our two sons the only ones of our side of the Knowles family are now resident in New Zealand so all our male descendants will be NZ born in the future!
Wow- great family history! Maybe the fellow with the flower in the lapel is the groom? Oh, but that's your grand dad- maybe not. Someone seems to be cut off on the right- at first I thought that could be the bride. At any rate it's just fantastic that you have such a legacy preserved in these photos. They've been fun to look at.
@beryl Ha ha, indeed, I think if I had 10 children I would be keeping my distance too.
@pcoulson Thanks Peter. I had a lot of help identifying them from my cousin Chris who lives in the Northern Territory, he is the great grandson of Joseph (the other boy in this photo). He travelled back to Yorkshire many years ago and met some of the relatives of the other family members. Also we got lots of information from Ancestry, the LDS site and Find My Past.
@happypat The family is still quite large, but the family name has fizzled out somewhat. My direct line has disappeared. I came down the James S line for 8 generations and then my Mum and Dad had me and I spoilt it. No more family name here.
My cousin who lives in the Northern Territory also no longer carries the family name because it was his Mum who was the direct descendant of this clan.
@craftymeg Large families were common back then weren't they. No television to keep them occupied in James and Martha's time, so I suppose they had to find something else to do, ha ha.
It was so nice of you to share your family history with these pictures. job well done, Babs. who will get these treasures when the time comes, if I may ask. fav.
