These calves were kept in a small field near the farmhouse - not sure why they were apart from their mothers. I don't understand farming!! LOL!!
Anyway even time we came back in the car and got out these heads would come over the wall as if to say hello. George and Finlay would greet them loudly - barking!! They were both afraid I think of these huge animals.
Best on black
Back home now so just using some of the shots I took during our holiday.
They look like they are at wraning age.. so not drinking Mothers milk any more or being fed by the farmer.. just eating grass.. hay.. meal and water.. cute shot..
Calves are separated from their mothers soon after birth Pam. Sounds cruel but the sooner it’s done the better. We used to leave them on for a few hours to get them drinking that first very rich milk then put them in pens & get them feeding from a teat or bucket, usually a bucket in the UK but I know in NZ they have amazing calf feeding machines with lots of teats @julzmaioro. It would not be viable for a dairy farm to leave calves & mums together, it would be completely chaotic & after all it is a business, we have to make money to survive. Times are hard now when you read all the ideas of this modern age when farming is seen as a cruel & unnecessary way of living. All I can say is that we loved our animals & looked after them as well as ourselves...even better sometimes!
Sorry that rather ran on & you didn’t ask for all that explanation!! Rather got on my soap box there! 🤣
