I don't know the rest of the botanical name for this ornamental black grass. It spreads quickly in our garden and in summer produces purple buds opening to mauve flowers.
@cleanfreak Thank you, we love the grasses. The stones are the bed for the fountain & are now surrounded by black grass. If you lived near, I would give you some pots - we've given masses away and still have masses.
That is beautiful. I'm not usually an admirer of grass in the garden but I wish I had a suitable corner or rather open space for that lovely specimen. I love the contrast between the spiky black leaves and the roundness of the mauve flowers.
@creativeamateur@w3n6y@doblaine@tishpics Thanks every body for your comments. A good friend (who is also a good gardener) has told me the full name: ophiopogon nigrescens. Another bit of knowledge for me through 365!
me too, Hazel! ophiopogon is what it is nigre bit says it is black. I'm not sure what scens means though. Most grass is either carex or festuca ophiopogon is one I have not come across.
@w3n6y We do have some other grasses (blue/green) so I expect I'll soon find myself researching and posting those. I'll use your info as pointers, thanks!
@maggiemae We have it mostly in a scree garden. The great thing is that you can buy say half a dozen plants and end up with masses in your own garden plus pot lots up to give friends.
