chimneys of Winchester College by quietpurplehaze

chimneys of Winchester College

The founder of Winchester College in the 14th century was William of Wykeham, Bishop of Winchester and Chancellor of England.

In 1394, the first 70 poor scholars entered the college. There were also 10 commoners (i.e. paying scholars.)

As a point of interest, I researched current fees to board at Winchester College and found that they are £33,750 per year.

Much of what remains of the Bishop's Palace at Bishops Waltham was also the work of William of Wykeham. Winchester was at that time the richest diocese in England.

It is interesting how chimneys were treated as a decorative element.

Another stunning building with great architecture & interest. I love these chimney's without which this building would look a tad plain.

This is a fun building to see.... you did a great job of capturing the texture in the bricks, the four chimneys above and the detail in the windows. The historical context is a plus! :)
