this country has not had its own unique, government-sanctioned flag since its parliament and government were prorogued in 1972, and abolished in 1973. this famous saint's saltire - half of which is depicted above - is sometimes used by the government to represent it alongside the other countries of this kingdom.

Hmmmm how interesting! Is this for the island of Ireland? I didn't know until just now that there isn't a flag for the whole piece of land! This challenge is certainly good for learning new things!
northern Ireland is the only part of the united kingdom that shares a land border with another state, the republic of ireland (see september 11 post - erin go braugh), because they're in the same island of ireland. st. patrick's saltire is a red X cross on white and is used occasionally alongside the other flags of the kingdom. if you look at the union flag, all three flags of england, scotland and st. patrick's saltire (denoting northern Ireland) are represented.
